Has there been an accurate count of the number? 6,000,000 Jews
was claimed early, the number sort of picked out of the air.
I have seen the following list:
6,000,000 Jews
5,000,000 Russians (non-Jewish)
2,000,000 Poles (non-Jewish)
500,000 Gypsies
500,000 others.
Is this close to correct? It seems to count all deaths in various
detention camps.

No, no, no. Forget Tom Clancy, go with Janes. Not high enough for
the TWA, 9400 geet vs the 13,000 to 14,000 feet of the TWA jst.
A shoulder fired SAM, yes. A Stinger from Afghanistan, no.

A very interesting point. I don’t know how well modern commercial
jet aircraft take damage. A hit in one of the engines might well
break the wing at that place, which would do it. I was very
surprised at tha damage of PA 103. The bomb was *very* small,
but the high altitude, coupled with the 0.8+ mach speed caused
almost complete breakup.
>If it were a

Perhaps yes, perhaps no. I would suspect that a ‘state of the art’
shoulder fired SAM could have been used.

Because I honestly think it was.
So you tell me how it was arrived at. I believe that I heard the
number many decades ago. It was current when I was at Cornell
(Class of 58). Frankly I do not think there was any accurate
count at that time. IMHO, it was a guess, probably one about
as high as anyone would possibly believe. I have heard explanations
based on “subtraction” (estimate Jewish population in the effected
areas before and after the Nazi era).
If you have any source (not just repetition of the number) please
post it.
BTW, in my opinion the number is not all that important. Would three
million be significantly less horrible than six million? Both are
absolutely atrocious. Exaggeration hurts; it does not help.

Most copyright time limits wre ‘grandfathered’ in the USA. Thus shorter
times were left short, and, I believe, in the 1920s the time limit was
not dependent on the life of the author, but a fixed time. So _Mein
Kampf_ is out of its copyright period.
But, as mentioned, translations have their own copyright.
