Nobel laureate under fire for new book on the role of ZYDS/Jews in
Soviet-era repression

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who first exposed the horrors of the Stalinist
gulag, is now attempting to tackle one of the most sensitive topics of his
writing career – the role of the Jews in the Bolshevik revolution and Soviet
purges.
In his latest book Solzhenitsyn, 84, deals with one of the last taboos of
the communist revolution: that Jews were as much perpetrators of the
repression as its victims. Two Hundred Years Together – a reference to the
1772 partial annexation of Poland and Russia which greatly increased the
Russian Jewish population – contains three chapters discussing the Jewish
role in the revolutionary genocide and secret police purges of Soviet
Russia.

But Jewish leaders and some historians have reacted furiously to the book,
and questioned Solzhenitsyn’s motives in writing it, accusing him of factual
inaccuracies and of fanning the flames of anti-semitism in Russia.
Solzhenitsyn argues that some Jewish satire of the revolutionary period
“consciously or unconsciously descends on the Russians” as being behind the
genocide. But he states that all the nation’s ethnic groups must share the
blame, and that people shy away from speaking the truth about the Jewish
experience.

In one remark which infuriated Russian Jews, he wrote: “If I would care to
generalise, and to say that the life of the Jews in the camps was especially
hard, I could, and would not face reproach for an unjust national
generalisation. But in the camps where I was kept, it was different. The
Jews whose experience I saw – their life was softer than that of others.”

Yet he added: “But it is impossible to find the answer to the eternal
question: who is to be blamed, who led us to our death? To explain the
actions of the Kiev cheka [secret police] only by the fact that two thirds
were Jews, is certainly incorrect.”

Solzhenitsyn, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970, spent much of
his life in Soviet prison camps, enduring persecution when he wrote about
his experiences. He is currently in frail health, but in an interview given
last month he said that Russia must come to terms with the Stalinist and
revolutionary genocides – and that its Jewish population should be as
offended at their own role in the purges as they are at the Soviet power
that also persecuted them.

“My book was directed to empathise with the thoughts, feelings and the
psychology of the Jews – their spiritual component,” he said. “I have never
made general conclusions about a people. I will always differentiate between
layers of Jews. One layer rushed headfirst to the revolution. Another, to
the contrary, was trying to stand back. The Jewish subject for a long time
was considered prohibited. Zhabotinsky [a Jewish writer] once said that the
best service our Russian friends give to us is never to speak aloud about
us.”

But Solzhenitsyn’s book has caused controversy in Russia, where one Jewish
leader said it was “not of any merit”.

“This is a mistake, but even geniuses make mistakes,” said Yevgeny
Satanovsky, president of the Russian Jewish Congress. “Richard Wagner did
not like the Jews, but was a great composer. Dostoyevsky was a great Russian
writer, but had a very sceptical attitude towards the Jews.

“This is not a book about how the Jews and Russians lived together for 200
years, but one about how they lived apart after finding themselves on the
same territory. This book is a weak one professionally. Factually, it is so
bad as to be beyond criticism. As literature, it is not of any merit.”

But DM Thomas, one of Solzhenitsyn’s biographers, said that he did not think
the book was fuelled by anti-semitism. “I would not doubt his sincerity. He
says that he firmly supports the state of Israel. In his fiction and factual
writing there are Jewish characters that he writes about who are bright,
decent, anti-Stalinist people.”

Professor Robert Service of Oxford University, an expert on 20th century
Russian history, said that from what he had read about the book,
Solzhenitsyn was “absolutely right”.

Researching a book on Lenin, Prof Service came across details of how
Trotsky, who was of Jewish origin, asked the politburo in 1919 to ensure
that Jews were enrolled in the Red army. Trotsky said that Jews were
disproportionately represented in the Soviet civil bureaucracy, including
the cheka.

“Trotsky’s idea was that the spread of anti-semitism was [partly down to]
objections about their entrance into the civil service. There is something
in this; that they were not just passive spectators of the revolution. They
were part-victims and part-perpetrators.

“It is not a question that anyone can write about without a huge amount of
bravery, and [it] needs doing in Russia because the Jews are quite often
written about by fanatics. Mr Solzhenitsyn’s book seems much more measured
than that.”

Yet others failed to see the need for Solzhenitsyn’s pursuit of this
particular subject at present. Vassili Berezhkov, a retired KGB colonel and
historian of the secret services and the NKVD (the precursor of the KGB),
said: “The question of ethnicity did not have any importance either in the
revolution or the story of the NKVD. This was a social revolution and those
who served in the NKVD and cheka were serving ideas of social change.

“If Solzhenitsyn writes that there were many Jews in the NKVD, it will
increase the passions of anti-semitism, which has deep roots in Russian
history. I think it is better not to discuss such a question now.”

Few people in the city believe that the Jewish murderers ever come to trial
and that the murders would be properly clarified by police investigaters in
present-day new democratic Russia.

Vladimir Salamatov, the lawyer representing the interests of the parents of
the murdered children told the paper that 5 independent experts confirmed
the lack of hemoglobine (red substance in human blood) in all burnt bodies.

“I am sure that it was a ritual murder with exsanguination”, he said.

Evgeny Kazantsev, the Head of Untraditional Religious Groups Monitoring
Center, agrees that it was a ritual murder.

A Moscow independent researcher and journalist, Mikhail Nazarov, stresses
that there is a large Jewish community in Krasnoyarsk and that the
authorities do their best to conceal this ritual murder committed by the
Jews. A witness reported seeing the bodies of the children thrown intact in
the pit as proscribed by the Jewish ritual and then somebody burnt then to
conceal ritual wounds in specific places of the bodies made for the
exsanguination, Mr nazarov said.

The researcher reminded of a well-known case of the ritual murder of a
10-year-old Christian child, Andyusha Yushchinsky in Kiev in 1913. A local
Jewish community activist, Beilis, was arrested and accused of the murder
and later released by a court because of insufficient evidence, with a minor
overweight among the jury.

“The murder of Andryusha Yushchinsky also took place few day before the
Jewish Passover, his body was also exsanguinated and thrown off without
burial”, Mr Nazarov said.

“And Beilis belonged to the same Lubavichi Hasidic branch of Judaism as the
present Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar who … copies American gangstes
practises (he was born in the US) and acts with support of Jewish oligarchs,
the Kransnoyarsk Chief Rabbi Wagner and the Jewish Governor of the
Krasnoyarsk Territory Khloponin”, Mr. Nazarov added in his interview with
the Moscow paper.

In Russia’s third largest city, the blood libel is resurfacing

The blood libel is alive and well in certain circles in Russia. Dozens of
posters have appeared of late in Russia’s third largest city, warning
residents to keep a close eye on their children as Passover approaches, lest
they fall victim to Jews seeking to make matzah out of their blood.

The posters, adhered to the walls of houses in the Siberian city of
Novosibirsk, warn: “These vermin are still performing rituals, stealing
small children and draining their blood to make their sacred bread.”

They also link a recent spate of child disappearances and murders to Jewish
ritual sacrifices.

The blood libel claims that Jews use the blood of gentiles – particularly
gentile children – to make ritual unleavened bread for Passover. It has been
around for centuries, prevalent primarily in Europe where it was used to
stir up violence and harsh reprisals against the Jewish community.

Amos Herman, Chairman of the Jewish Agency’s branch responsible for fighting
anti-Semitism stated that “We are certain that the government of Russia will
find the perpetrators of this crime and solve this problem once and for
all.”

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia recently expressed concern
about the rise in attacks targeting Jews, calling it part of “a recent surge
in anti-Semitic manifestations” in Russia.

In 2007, 67 people were killed and more than 550 injured in ethnically
motivated attacks, according the SOVA rights center, which monitors hate
crimes.

According to varying estimates, between 300,000 and 1.5 million Jews live in
the nation of 142 million. After an exodus in the years before and after
1991 Soviet collapse, the Jewish community is experiencing a moderate
revival, with new synagogues, schools and cultural centers being built
across the country.

During the Soviet era, thousands of Jews were imprisoned or executed as part
of nationwide purges, and many more were forced to conceal their Jewish
identity.

Resurgence of the blood libel

Last year, Professor Ariel Toaff of Bar-Ilan University ignited a storm of
controversy when he published a book in Italy alleging that there is a
factual basis for some of the medieval blood libels against the Jews.

Toaff stood by his findings published in the book “Pasque di Sangue”, but
said he was sorry his arguments had been twisted and later released a
revised edition of the book that clarified that Jews were not involved in
ritualized murder in medieval Europe.

The Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has told the Guardian he is
plotting the violent overthrow of President Putin from his base in
Britain after forging close contacts with members of Russia’s ruling
elite.

In comments which appear calculated to enrage the Kremlin, and which
will further inflame relations between London and Moscow, the
multimillionaire claimed he was already bankrolling people close to
the president who are conspiring to mount a palace coup.

“We need to use force to change this regime,” he said. “It isn’t
possible to change this regime through democratic means. There can be
no change without force, pressure.” Asked if he was effectively
fomenting a revolution, he said: “You are absolutely correct.”

Although Mr Berezovsky, with an estimated fortune of £850m, may have
the means to finance such a plot, and although he enjoyed enormous
political influence in Russia before being forced into exile, he said
he could not provide details to back up his claims because the
information was too sensitive.

Last night the Kremlin denounced Mr Berezovsky’s comments as a
criminal offence which it believed should undermine his refugee status
in the UK.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s chief spokesman, said: “In accordance
with our legislation [his remarks are] being treated as a crime. It
will cause some questions from the British authorities to Mr
Berezovsky. We want to believe that official London will never grant
asylum to someone who wants to use force to change the regime in
Russia.”

It will not be the first time the British government has faced
accusations from the Kremlin that it is providing a safe haven for Mr
Berezovsky. When he told a Moscow radio station last year that he
wanted to see Mr Putin overthrown by force, Jack Straw, then foreign
secretary, told the Commons that “advocating the violent overthrow of
a sovereign state is unacceptable” and warned the tycoon he could be
stripped of his refugee status.

Russian authorities subsequently sent an extradition request to
London. That failed, however, when a district judge ruled Mr
Berezovsky could not be extradited as long as he has asylum status.

In an interview with the Guardian, however, Mr Berezovsky goes much
further than before, claiming to be in close contact with members of
Russia’s political elite who, he says, share his view that Mr Putin is
damaging Russia by rolling back democratic reforms, smothering
opposition, centralising power and flouting the country’s
constitution.

“There is no chance of regime change through democratic elections,” he
says. “If one part of the political elite disagrees with another part
of the political elite – that is the only way in Russia to change the
regime. I try to move that.”

While declining to describe these contacts – and alleging that they
would be murdered if they were identified – he maintained that he was
offering his “experience and ideology” to members of the country’s
political elite, as well as “my understanding of how it could be
done”. He added: “There are also practical steps which I am doing now,
and mostly it is financial.”

Mr Berezovsky said he was unconcerned by any threat to strip him of
his refugee status. “Straw wasn’t in a position to take that decision.
A judge in court said it wasn’t in the jurisdiction of Straw.”

He added that there was even less chance of such a decision being
taken following the polonium-210 poisoning last November of his former
employee, Alexander Litvinenko. “Today the reality is different
because of the Litvinenko case.”

Mr Berezovsky, 61, a former mathematician, turned to business during
the Yeltsin years and made his fortune by capturing state assets at
knockdown prices during Russia’s rush towards privatisation.

Although he played a key role in ensuring Mr Putin’s victory in the
2000 presidential elections, the two men fell out as the newly elected
leader successfully wrested control of Russia back from the so-called
oligarchy, the small group of tycoons who had come to dominate the
country’s economy.

A few months after the election Mr Berezovsky fled Russia, and applied
successfully for asylum in the UK after Mr Litvinenko, an officer with
the KGB’s successor, the FSB, came forward to say he had been ordered
to murder the tycoon.

Mr Berezovsky changed his name to Platon Elenin, Platon being the name
of a character in a Russian film based loosely upon his life. He was
subsequently given a British passport in this name.

As well as claiming to be financing and encouraging coup plotters in
Moscow, Mr Berezovsky said he had dedicated much of the last six years
to “trying to destroy the positive image of Putin” that many in the
west held, portraying him whenever possible as a dangerously anti-
democratic figure. He said he had also opposed the Russian president
through Kommersant, the influential Russian newspaper which he
controlled until last year.

Last month Mr Berezovsky was questioned by two detectives from the
Russian prosecutor general’s office who were in London to investigate
the death of Mr Litvinenko. He has denied claims that he refused to
answer many of their questions.

Last night the Kremlin said Russian authorities might want to question
him again in the light of his interview with the Guardian. “I now
believe our prosecutor general’s office has got lots of questions for
Mr Berezovsky,” said Mr Peskov. He added: “His words are very
interesting. This is a very sensitive issue.”

The Foreign Office said it had nothing to add to Mr Straw’s comments
of last year.

Academia’s fixation on cultural sensitivity is changing the debate
around female genital mutilation, with a growing number of professors
and women’s rights activists becoming hesitant to condemn the practice.

Where feminists rallied against the operation from the pages of Ms.
magazine in the 1970s, today’s critics are infinitely more cautious,
with most suggesting that the Western world butt out until Muslim
African communities are ready to reconsider what they are doing to
their daughters.

The shift in attitudes about the practice– which in the worst of cases
involves the carving out of a woman’s clitoris and inner labia and can
cause lifelong urinary tract infections, sterility and even death —
comes at a time when high-profile victims of the operation such as
writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali and model Waris Dirie, both Somalis, have
launched very public campaigns against the practice.

The issue is so explosive, it has two names — female genital
mutilation, or FGM, to those most vociferously opposed to the practice;
and female genital cutting, or FGC, to those in the less-condemning
camp.

The latter includes the chair of anthropology at the University of
Toronto, who has written a new book on the subject. Although not
prepared to defend what she calls FGC, Janice Boddy defends women who
undergo the operation and want the practice to continue in future
generations.

“There are good reasons within the society for the operation to
continue, but these are cultural reasons. They are not scientific
ones,” says Prof. Boddy, author of Civilizing Women: British Crusades
in Colonial Sudan.

Working through British and Sudanese archives, she looks at the history
of FGC in that country, particularly European colonial interactions
with the practice, from British nurses attempting to re-educate
Sudanese midwives in the 1920s, to the country’s outlawing of the
practice in 1946 amid Western pressure.

“It isn’t a happy situation by any means. I wouldn’t want it to
continue. But I think that up until this point, the West has not been
particularly helpful in the way that it’s gone about trying to assist
in the eradication,” Prof. Boddy says.

Prevalent in, though not exclusive to, Muslim societies, particularly
in Sudan, Somalia, northern Kenya and parts of Ethiopia and Indonesia,
female genital mutilation takes on its most severe form in
infibulation, or pharaonic circumcision.

This can involve the removal of both the clitoris and inner labia with
crude instruments such as razors. The entire vagina is then sewn up
with thread, or fastened with thorns.

In this way, a woman’s virginity — considered especially important by
Muslim men–can be proven before her father is paid the bride price.

The Sudanese, Prof. Boddy argues, are a fiercely guarded culture, one
that sees the practice as a defence of their people against intruders,
and, astonishingly, as protection against injury.

“The cultural context in which this practice takes place supports the
idea of enclosing the body against harm,” she writes in her book. The
social body is closed against intrusion from the outside by marriages
between relatives. People marry cousins … The kinship system is quite
closed. That image of the defensive society, the defensive social body,
is carried over into this idea of defending the physical body.

A RACE-HATE website operating from Adelaide has sparked a furious reaction

action against Dr Fredrick Toben, 62, from Wattle Park, who runs the
Adelaide Institute website.

Dr Toben was the subject of a Federal Court directive in 2002 preventing the

anti-Jewish articles are still accessible from the site.

Council past president, Jeremy Jones, says the organisation is now
considering legal action.

The move follows a national report finding that physical attacks against
Jews have reached a record high.

The report, released by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry,
identifies 156 physical attacks against Jews in the year to the end of
September. The data, which has been collected on a national level since
1989, chronicled other attacks including arson, threats ? via posters,
leaflets, email, telephone or sms ? and vandalism.

In the 12-month period, there were 442 attacks.

Dr Toben’s website was also flagged in the report.

“It is an ongoing concern and we are actively considering all options open
to us,” Mr Jones said.

The 2002 ruling found that the website had published material which implied
some Jews had exaggerated Jewish deaths in World War II for financial gain.

While Dr Toben has since published a disclaimer on his site outlining the
court-imposed restrictions, Mr Jones says the website’s content is still an
issue.

“There has been quite a lot of anti-Jewish material published on that site,”
he said. “Not exactly the same wording but the same kind of material.” The
website contains links to an array of anti-Semitic material including:

ARTICLES which question whether the Holocaust actually occurred.

CLAIMS that the death toll from the Holocaust has been exaggerated.

LINKS to another website blaming Jews for some of the biggest crimes in the
past century, including the 1999 Columbine High School massacre where 12
students were killed, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing which killed 168
people and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“The internet gives everybody a megaphone and a potential international
audience,” Mr Jones said.

“And if one person ? who would otherwise have had no reason to dislike
another human being ? forms negative opinions because of something put on a
website, the racist might be quite happy but all the rest of us have reason
to be concerned,” he said.

It is understood Dr Toben is overseas and he could not be reached for
comment.
