"Shattered! 50 Years of Silence, History and Voices of the Tragedy in Romania and Transnistria" is dedicated to the memory of our beloved martyrs who perished in the pogroms in war-time Romania and in Transnistria, where they lie buried in the alien soil of the towns, villages, roads and ditches of what was South- Western Ukraine before World War II (called Transnistria between 1941-1944). They have no graves, no tombstones, and no memorials. Y'he Zihram Baruh! (Hebrew: May their memory be blessed!).
This book is also dedicated to the survivors of Transnistria, who experienced unspeakable cruelty and brutality at the hands of their tormentors. The human mind has to stretch far beyond its normal limits to accept that such barbarism actually happened.
This volume is a monument to the miraculous power of endurance and regeneration of the Jewish people. This enduring capacity leaves us in awe of their ability to survive the unbelievable, and to reconstruct themselves as vital individuals, energetic communities and as a renewed nation.
Through this book we are sharing our legacy with our children, grandchildren, and future generations of Jews and non-Jews who must fight against prejudice and discrimination of any kind and meet the challenges of preventing such atrocities from ever happening again.
Last, but not least, this book is a dedication to the heroic Righteous Amongst the Gentiles, who risked their lives to save fellow human beings labelled undesirable by a vicious and sick Nazi social order. For "he, who saves a single life saves the world entire."(The Talmud: Sanhedrin 37:11).
