"During July, 1942 ... several Germans crossed into Switzerland
with fundamental revelations. One of them was Ernst Lemmer, a
founder of the German Democratic Party in 1918 and Minister in West
Germany during the 1950s and 1960s. Lemmer spent the wartime years
as a newspaper correspondent in Budapest, Brussels, and
Switzerland. According to Walter Laquer, who made a search of these
messengers, Lemmer met with several Swiss public figures in Zurich
that July and told them about 'gas chambers, stationary and mobile,
in which Jews were killed.' He wanted this news to be disseminated,
but he was somewhat mistrusted and no one was inclined to do as he
   asked." (Laqueur, 211-213. Hilberg, 236)
