Death notice in a German newspaper by the family of an asylum patient. A rash of family notices about "unbelievable" asylum deaths raised suspicion among German citizens and U.S. diplomats. --"The dark and deep secrecy surrounding the Castle of Grafeneck, entrance to which is strictly forbidden to all except the Black Guard man on duty, gradually led the local inhabitants to become uneasy and suspicious." Cable from the U.S. vice consul in Leipzig, Paul Dutko, to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, concerning the Grafeneck mental asylum. --"It is still forbidden by law in Germany to prematurely cause the death of so-called incurable mental patients. If the Black Guards, for whatever veiled reasons, can and are prematurely killing mental patients, this cruelty will further impress upon many people the complete lawlessness of the National Socialists." Dutko's cable, which also reached the top levels of the State Department. --"In the German insane asylums, district nursing homes and asylums for idiots thousands of patients are secretly murdered monthly. Not only those who are public wards but also the paying inmates. Besides the very ill, there are also slightly ill patients (loss of mentality due to old age)." Anonymous German letter sent in December 1940 to NBC in New York and passed on to the War Department in Washington. --"There does not seem any reason to doubt the veracity in principle of the information transmitted. On the contrary, everything points to it being correct, especially as the carrying out of these killings conforms with national-socialist principles." Military intelligence officer Frederick Sharp, writing to the acting chief of staff in the War Department about the anonymous letter. -- John Morrisat University of Alberta
