'Neo Nazis' face knives, machete, in subway assault

TORONTO

Two men were in custody and one man in hospital after a bloody subway
station brawl between anti| racists and a group of alleged neo- Nazis
early Saturday, police said.

"They were fighting with knives I and pipes," said Det.  Sgt.  Bill
Hawley "Several people got hurt."

Weapons, including a knife, five or six pipes and a machete, were
seized by police after the fight among about 20 people at the Kennedy
subway station in suburban Scarborough.

A group of more than 15 young people associated with the Anti-Racist
Action organization got off the subway at 2 a.m.  and followed three
young people to a nearby bus terminal, said Det.  Wayne King, lead
investigator for the case.

The anti-racists accused the three of being neo-Nazis, which the trio
has denied.

King said he suspected the anti-racists were out "trolling, looking
for trouble." "You just don't go out with knives, pipes and machetes
under your coat...  They taunted these I people and harassed
them" King said.

One person pulled a pocket knife 2 others pulled out machetes and
pipes, leaving the subway station treated with blood.

One member of the anti-racist group was in stable condition Saturday
after he was stabbed in the jugular vein and lost about two-thirds of
his blood.  Two others were treated for minor stab wounds.  Two people
accused of being neo-Nazis were in custody Saturday.  Adrian Kaddie,
22, faces a charge of attempted murder.  Kristian Brandes, 19, faces
charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and weapons
dangerous. 

They're expected to appear in court Monday. 

King said he expects to lay charges early this week against members of
the anti-racist group.

No member of the group could be reached immediately to comment.

Anti-Racist Action was started in September 1992 and grew fast
attracting hundreds of young people to its gatherings and working to
counter recruiting efforts of white supremacists.

The group's tactics have alienated more moderate anti-racists.
