Prison urged for German synagogue arson defendants
SCHLESWIG, Germany, March 31 (Reuter) - A German prosecutor
demanded jail sentences of up to six years on Friday for four
men accused of torching a German synagogue a year ago in the
first such attack since the Nazi Third Reich.
The attack on the synagogue in the northern town of Luebeck
drew worldwide attention. Thousands of Germans held marches and
vigils protesting against waves of far-right violence that have
dogged the country since unification in 1990.
Five people in the building at the time escaped unhurt but
the synagogue was badly damaged.
The defendants, aged between 20 and 25, have been on trial
amid tight security since November 24.
State Prosecutor Guenter Moeller depicted the men as
neo-Nazis acting out of anti-Semitism and xenophobia.
Three of the men were guilty of five counts of attempted
murder and aggravated arson, he said. The fourth could only be
sentenced as an accomplice to aggravated arson, he added.
Around 300 people demonstrated in Luebeck on Sunday to mark
the anniversary of a firembomb attack.
