Arsonists attack Turkish property in Germany

    BONN, March 14 (Reuter) - A mosque and travel agents were
 among several Turkish properties attacked with fire-bombs in
 Germany overnight, but no one was injured, police said on
 Tuesday.

    The attacks were the latest in a series of similar incidents
 which police have previously blamed on Kurdish militants,
 prompting the government to ban several Kurdish organisations.

    In the latest attacks, one Turkish travel agency in Berlin
 was set on fire, and petrol bombs were hurled at two others but
 failed to ignite, while in Duisburg a Turkish club was targeted.

    In Buende near the northern town of Herford, arsonists threw
 petrol bombs at a Turkish mosque and into the courtyard of a
 Turkish house. There was no serious damage to either building.

    Recent attacks on Turkish property in Germany have led to
 the arrest of sympathisers of the banned separatist Kurdistan
 Workers' Party (PKK), and two weeks' ago authorities outlawed
 six more groups believed to be linked to the PKK.

    The PKK is waging a guerrilla war against Ankara for an
 independent Kurdish homeland in southeast Turkey.

    German media have quoted security sources saying police fear
 the PKK plans demonstrations and violence in Germany around the
 Kurdish New Year on March 21. Germany is home to more than
 400,000 Kurds.

    During last year's festival, Kurds blockaded German
 motorways and clashed with police in protest against what they
 see as Ankara's oppression of Kurds in southeastern Turkey and
 against Bonn's ties with the Turkish government.

    Bonn banned the PKK and dozens of associated groups in 1993
 after a series of coordinated raids against Turkish targets
 across Europe.
