Source: Western Jewish Bulletin, Feb. 2, 1996, p. 7 BB given standing in Keegstra appeal Toronto - The League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada announced it has been given standing by the Supreme Court to intervene in the appeal of the 1992 conviction of James Keegstra for willingly promoting hatred against Jews. Keegstra was a teacher in Eckville, Alberta, allegedly telling his students that Jews were "teacherous", "subversive", "sadistic", "money-loving", "power hungry", "child killers", and responsible for most of the evil in the world. He was originally convicted in 1985 but his conviction was eventually overturned on legal grounds not related to the constitutionality of the Hate Law and a retrial was ordered. He was convicted again in 1992 and this conviction is now under appeal on several grounds including the argument that section 319 does not allow the defendant to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
