"For it was history that, as far as the prosecution was concerned, stood in
the center of the trial." Hannah Arendt, in her report on the banality of
evil, argued that Adolf Eichmann was a prop at his 1961 trial; antisemitism
was the real target of Israeli justice. Eichmann's role as a supporting
player in large dramas continues: The release of his self-justifying prison
memoirs, sealed for 38 years, reveals little new about the man. He wrote
that he followed Hitler's orders to wipe out European Jewry. Rather, Israel
intended to assist the libel defense of Prof. Deborah Lipstadt, who called
Hitler apologist David Irving a "Holocaust denier." Irving has alleged that
Hitler was "not cognizant" of the war against the Jews.

An irony: Israel suppressed the memoirs for fear they would be used to deny
the Holocaust.

David Irving’s effort to discredit author Primo Levi
(Cover Story, Feb. 28), by
saying that Levi "wrote for payment for profit-driven
publishers" reveals the
nature of Irving’s hollow mission.

The shining quality of Levi’s writing is that he shuns
any description of the
Holocaust as a transcendental phenomenon beyond the
grasp of human
comprehension. With uncompromising integrity, he
writes a day-in, day-out
chronicle of events on the personal level, one detail
added to the next. What
emerges is an unsentimental account, all the more
credible because Levi
illuminates only one small corner of that enormous
occurrence known as the Holocaust.

This is precisely what Irving would like to sweep away
with his belittling reference
to the paycheck that Levi received from his publishers.

As a survivor of the Holocaust, I feel very angry that
we are still being forced,
this time in a British courtroom, to prove the mass
murder of the Jews.

There is a saying that if you send a cockroach to
Germany, they will note down
the time it arrived, and also its condition.

The Germans meticulously document everything. They
documented the murder
of the Jews, too. And these documents make David
Irving’s belittling of the
Holocaust not only inaccurate, but also ridiculous.
