Kirk to Secretary of State described Hitler at the Reichstag speech as follows: Hitler looked more worn and earnest than he has on any recent public appearance. He smiled ironically as is frequently his habit at the opening of a Reichstag session as a signal for the customary laughter and tears which, however, on this occasion sounded a trifle forced. He was deadly serious during the speech and sat with bowed head for several minutes at the end.
