French court rejects Nazi aide's bid for release
VERSAILLES, France, April 4 (Reuter) - A French appeals
court on Tuesday rejected a bid by Nazi collaborator Paul
Touvier, jailed for life for crimes against humanity, to be
freed on bail pending a possible retrial, justice sources said.
It was the third time judges had rejected such a request by
Touvier, 80, who applied for a retrial after he was sentenced to
life imprisonment by an assize court a year ago.
The first Frenchman ever convicted of crimes against
humanity, Touvier was found guilty of ordering the execution of
seven Jews in Rillieux-la-Pape, near Lyon, in June 1944 while he
was regional intelligence chief of the pro-Nazi militia.
He is being held in Paris's La Sante prison.
