Kelowna racist may head east

White supremacist Charles Scott is rumoured to be leaving
Kelowna to look for work in Ontario, but he's expected to be
back in the Okanagan town for a Sept. 19 court date after an
alleged altercation with a CBC news crew.

According to CHBC news producer Rick Webber, a camera crew
from his station was shooting a man-in-the-street segment on
Thursday, Aug. 17 at a local mall, when they came across Mr.
Scott.

"They attempted to ask him a few questions about things like,
'are you planning to leave Kelowna anytime soon seeing as you
seem to be under a fair amount of pressure from the local
public', that sort of thing," said Mr. Webber of the alleged
incident.

"He didn't take kindly to us, so as we approached him, he
grabbed the camera and stomped on it several times. He has
since been charged with mischief over $5,000."

Mr. Webber also said that Mr. Scott made what the station
considers a threatening phone call to CHBC news director Gord
Vizzutti. "So now they (RCMP) are also investigating the
possibility of charging him with uttering a threat."

While the man voted Aryan of the Year may be leaving the
Kelowna area, human rights activists and members of the local
Jewish community say they'll continue the battle against
racism with a planned education program.

News of Mr. Scott's possible move to Ontario was welcomed by
Okanagan Jewish Community Association spokesman Robert Levin.

"We here at the Okanagan Jewish Community Association and
Kelowna Organized Against Racism (KOR) have still been putting
our heads together for further steps to take to discourage his
presence in the community. But if he's already moving on then
that's good news," Mr. Levin said.

The OJC spokesman added that he is in favor of continuing with
the plan to implement an information and education program
with KOR, even if Mr. Scott leaves the area.

Mr. Levin pointed out that Mr. Scott is not the only person in
the Okanagan with racist views, "I think with momentum in
play, whatever education we can do should be done."

Mr. Scott himself has complained to police of being harrassed,
citing incidents of rocks being thrown at his home.
