HEADLINE: REFUGEE STATUS FOR MURDER SUSPECT?

   A Filipino wanted for a political assassination and an Iraqi couple 
suspected of terrorism are close to getting Canadian refugee status.
   Rodolfo Pacificador, 34, wanted in the Philippines for murdering a top 
official got the green light from an Immigration Canada adjudicator yesterday 
to become a refugee.
   Pacificador could have landed-immigrant status here in a year.
   He was charged with the murder of Evelio Javier, after Ferdinand Marcos was
defeated by Corazon Aquino for the presidency. Pacificador entered Canada 
without proper travel permits in 1987.
   SECOND PHASE  
   And Joseph and Sarah Smith will appear at an immigration court June 12 for 
the second phase of their claim.
   The couple, whose real names aren't given, were jailed for two months after
Canadian officials found an alleged ``shopping list'' of weapons.
   The couple were freed March 11 after a court ruled there weren't grounds to
hold them.
   The Smiths were nabbed trying to enter Canada with fake passports Jan. 9. 
They applied for refugee status.
