Subj: RTw 12/18 1748 U.S. seeks order against alleged Lithuanian Nazi
In a Christopher Wilson story from Reuters, published on
December 18, 1995, the following points were made:

Prosecutors were trying to strip Aleksandras Lileikis of
his citizenship, but Lileikis, 88 years of age, would not
co-operate and answer questions put to him about his role
during WWII, citing the 5th. amendment. The court has already
ruled that, because he lied about his past on his citizenship
application, he was not entitled to plead it.

He "admitted he participated in the virtually complete destruction
of the Jewish population of Vilnius, Lithuania..."

He had been the chief of the Saugumas secret police in Vilnius province
from 1941 to 1944.

The US wants to strip him of his citizenship and return him to
Lithuania for trial.

He is accused of being involved in the deaths of " least
40,000 Jews who were shot to death in the woods outside Vilnius. "

"Captured records ... show that Lileikis repeatedly signed and issued
orders directing that arrested Jews be held ... in the Vilnius Hard Labour
Prison, and then that they be turned over to the infamous 'Special Detachment'
... and the German security police for execution," the prosecutors said.
