Opera or classical music pieces? I am a Handel/Bach man. Right now I am listening to Handel's Saul, one of my absolute favorite pieces of music. Another favorite, in quite a different mood and style, is the sublime duet "As steals the morn upon the night" from Handel's *L'allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato*. Bach's B-minor mass, St. Matthew Passion, and the cantatas, particularly cantatas 1, 19, 23, 34, 50, 51, 78, 79, 80, 82, 106, 130, 140, 147, 208, and 211. If I were to boil this down to the essentials, what would remain are the duet "Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen Schritten" from cantata 78 and the aria "Schlummert ein" from contata 82. I also enjoy the music of a few lesser known composers, such as André Campra, William Boyce, John Stanley, and Johan Helmich Roman For an emotional experience that will leave you unnerved, see a good performance of Beethoven's *Fidelio*. The plot is trite, but the music and, if done well, the performance, can and usually are electrifying. I don't play any instrument, but have been interested in the history and social function of music, particularly 18th century German and English music, since childhood. I have taught courses on Handel's English-language oratorios as an option in our department's cultural studies program.
