Ottawa accused of botching case against alleged war criminal

The federal Justice Department prosecuted an 83-year-old man for
crimes against humanity knowing he would never be convicted, says a
group that tracks down alleged war criminals.

The case against Radislav Grujicic of Windsor, Ont., likely came to an
end this week when the case was stayed because of his ill health. He
suffered from heart disease and diabetes.

A judge said he had "profound concern" over the health of the retired
bookseller, who had pleased not guilty to kidnapping and conspiracy to
commit murder during the Second World War.

But Sol Littman, Canadian director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre,
accused federal officials of deliberately losing the case.

"I think they were intent on discrediting the whole war crimes
prosecution process to make it seem pitiless and vengeful in the eyes
of the Canadian public."

Peter Lamont, a member of the Justice Department's special war crimes
unit and a Crown prosecutor in the Grujicic case, denied Littman's
allegations.

Grujicic, a former CIA operative who worked briefly for the RCMP's
Special Branch, under the name Marko Jankovic, spying on suspected
communists in Canada.
