     By doing its job more rigorously, the FBI could raise serious issues
for Clinton's re-election. As we have indicated in past issues, Clinton's
greatest vulnerability may lie in evidence that the Oklahoma bombing was
a government sting operation that went awry. Powerful evidence to this
effect has been assembled by Glenn and Kathy Wilburn of Oklahoma City
(the grandparents of two victims of the bombing).
     For example, the Welburns believe that they have identified the
mysterious and long-missing witness, "John Doe II," as Mike Brescia.
Brescia is a Pennsylvania native who dropped out of LaSalle University
in his third year and went to the Ozarks to join the armed religious
cult at Elohim City. Brescia was the roommate of Andreas Strassmeir,
a former German Army officer and the man London's Sunday Telegraph
reports "the Welburns have announced that they plan to name in a
lawsuit as a 'U.S. federal informant with material knowledge of the
bombing.'" Three witnesses at the Ryder truck agency where the vehicle
used in the blast was rented are adamant that they saw McVeigh there
with "John Doe II."
     The day after the bombing, when the artists sketches of "John Doe I"
and "John Doe II" were widely circulating, two witnesses came forward to
tell the F.B.I they knew both "John Does." One of the witnesses, a
former girl friend of bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh, told the F.B.I.
that "John Doe II" was a man named "Mike" with a tattoo on his left
arm(John Doe II was described as having such a tattoo). The girl friend's
mother, Connie Smith, also identified "John Doe II" as a "friend of McVeigh."
     Smith told The Telegraph that the F.B.I. was not receptive to her
testimony:"The F.B.I. made me feel guilty, then ignorant, as if I
didn't know what I was saying. Then, later, I tried to call in with more
information and they wouldn't even talk to me."
     Notwithstanding the leads provided by these witnesses and others,
the Justice Department announced that "John Doe II" was a soldier who
merely happened to visit the rental truck agency a day after McVeigh,
and was in no way related to the case.
     The evidence compiled by the Wilburns suggests otherwise. They wonder
why the F.B.I. showed so little interest in following up leads pointing
to Brescia as as "John Doe II". Experts familiar with the evidence
think they know. Cases involving violence or planned violence by militias
>from  around the U.S. show a recurring theme of government penetration
and infiltration of militia groups. For example, testimony in the
Musgoge bombing case showed that the F.B.I. was literally paying the
operating expenses, including phone bills for the Tri-State Militia.
The strong implication is that the F.B.I. has failed to follow through
on leads that would expose the involvement of federal agents or
informants in the Oklahoma City bombing. But this will become a matter
of public record in due course anyway. A number of mainstream news
organizations have assigned reporters to look into the Wilburn's
allegations. F.B.I. Director Freeh and other thinking leaders in the
F.B.I. may wish to rescue the F.B.I.'s reputation and their own by
returning to the Oklahoma bombing investigation and doing a more credible
job. The F.B.I. will not wish to be categorized as a federal version
of the corrupt Arkansas state police, which was thoroughly politicized
during the Clinton and Tucker era.
     Informed sources tell SI that Arkansas's incoming governor,
Mike Hucka bee, has already begun making plans to clean out the corrupt
leadership in the state police. SI's opinion: the F.B.I.'s top
leadership could soon take steps to prevent the F.B.I. from being
thoroughly sullied by association with efforts to cover up for the
Clintons.
     It is also probable that some members of the F.B.I. could make a
useful contribution to the investigation of the death of Vince Foster
At least four members of Congress, from both sides of the aisle, have
written to Director Freeh to inquire about the harassment of Foster
case witness Patrick Knowlton. The fact that federal agents have
harassed Knowlton will be proved in a soon-to-be-filed lawsuit.

know.  As I get deeper into the Oklahoma City bombing investigation, the
answer has become plain, even generic:  "Why don't you ask the ATF & FBI,
they've got most of these monsters (or their friends) on their payroll."

And now, to events OKC:

Strategic Investment newsletter once again has a statement about the
importance of the Wilburn OKC investigation to the continued health of the
Clinton Administration (attached).  Unfortunately in his plea to Louis
Freeh to clean up the FBI, the SI writer ignores the fact that in order to
do that Freeh would have to arrest himself!  "Mr. Freeh, you have the
right to remain silent...."

Was the mysterious German visitor Andreas Strassmeir part of a carefully
crafted and top-secret government agency?  Or did high-level federal law
enforcement officials simply bungle opportunities to arrest and question
the same man edscribed in a "wanted" poster as a heavily-armed "illegal
alien" traveling around the U.S. and pruportedly providing paramilitary
training to suspected terrorist groups?

The questions take on pointed urgency and ominous implications with fresh
documents obtained by the McCURTAIN GAZETTE from the FBI.  Those documents
show that Strassmeir was the subject of a "BOLO" bulletin ("Be On The
Lookout) by the ATF, seeking his arrest weeks before the bombing in
Oklahoma City.

Even more incredibly, the Gazette has obtained FBI documents that indicate
the former German military officer, whose links to bombing defendant
Timothy McVeigh have been detailed by this newspaper, was once considered
a suspect in the attack on the Murrah building.  But he was never, for
some unexplained reason, detained or questioned by the FBI during the
eight months he remained in the U.S. after the bombing.  (Only after
pointed queries about his links to the bombing suspects from this
newspaper did Strassmeir flee the country.  He remains in seclusion in his
parents' Berlin home under heavy security.)

In light of claims by the U.S. Justice Department to have conducted more
than 21,000 interviews globally in an attempt to identify those who may
have been involved in the worst terrorist bombing in the nation's history,
the "oversight" of federal agencies in questioning Strassmeir is
singularly curious.

Was Strassmeir, then, an undercover agent for a federal agency?  As
reported recently by the Gazette, a high-level official at the FBI said
the classified computer records of the ATF contain evidence that
Strassmeir was indeed a key component in the agency's espionage operation
at Elohim City near Muldrow, Oklahoma, and several far-flung neo-Nazi
groups around the country.

WHY "WANTED" NOTICE?

The ATF, however, has refused to confirm or deny the reports to members of
the national news media.  It has consistently refused to comment or make
any official statements regarding this newspaper's story.

But if Strassmeir were a paid ATF informant, why did the Tulsa office of
the ATF issue a BOLO for him just weeks before the bombing of the Oklahoma
City federal building?  Was it a case of the left hand of the agency not
knowing what the right hand was doing?  Or was it designed to be a
credible "extraction" for an undercover agent?

The ATF is not saying.  The only link is the high-level FBI official's
remarks made unoffically and off-the-record.  

What is known is that weeks before the bombing in Oklahoma City, the Tulsa
ATF provided the Oklahoma Highway Patrol a BOLO for what it described as
the security chief at the Elohim City compound.  Here's what the BOLO
said:

"ANDREAS STRASSMEIR, W/M, 5/17/59, heavy German acent.  Black Hair/ Blue
Eyes.  1" scar on chin, wears cammo fatigues.  Possible Tennessee driver's
license.  Came to USA in 5/91, passport was good until 8/91.  He never
left the country.  INS says he does not have an extension of his VISA. 
Possibly in blue Chevy, late model, tag BXH 346 (not on file), usually has
someone driving him.  Carries a .45 auto pistol at all times.  He is an
illegal alien, ATF wants to be notified if he is stopped and has the gun
on him.  They will file the charges.  Contact: Agent Angela Finley, ATF.

STATE HELP ON GERMAN

Within 36 hours of the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building,
senior officials at the ATF and FBI were provided intelligence on
Strassmeir from Oklahoma law enforcement members, this newspaper has
learned.

In mid-May, 1995, a written report from the FBI detailed those suspicions
>from  Oklahoma terrorism experts concerning Strassmeir.  That classified
document set out these facts: That Strassmeir was a German citizen and his
father a powerful former member of the German parliament...that he was in
the German military...that he was the principal militia trainer at Elohim
City, a redoubt of the Christian Identity Movement.

Federal officials were also advised that the Immigration and
Naturalization Service had an outstanding warrant for Strassmeir's arrest
for failing to leave the U.S. when his visa expired.  Additional facts
were also broached in the documents sent to federal authorities.

They should be considered within the context of former Elohim City
resident Richard Wayne Snell, whose death sentence in an Arkansas prison
was carried out just hours after the Oklahoma City bombing-- and may have
inspired it, some knowledgeable observers contend.

Snell told Arkansas prison officials just four days before his scheduled
execution that there would be a bombing on the day of his death.  He
didn't say where, but Snell and another well-known radical, James Ellison,
had cased the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City back in
the early 1980s.

The report to the FBI from state intelligence observers noted that
Strassmeir was alleged to train platoon-sized groups consisting of 30 to
40 individual militia members from throughout the U.S. every three months
at Elohim City...that Strassmeir was observed at Elohim City as recently
as two weeks prior to that...that Strassmeir had in the past attempted to
purchase a 747 aircraft from Lufthansa Airlines... that in 1992, some 960
yards of concrete was transported to Elohim City via 122 concrete trucks,
presumably for bunkers and weapons storage facilities...that the compound
was believed to be generating income through the sale of illegal drugs
produced on the 400-acre compound...and that a confidential source advised
that another resident of Elohim City bore a striking resemblance to "John
Doe #2," then being sought by federal authorities."

all that's happened since..all of the revelations about Brescia, the

Thus, a month after the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building,
Strassmeir was still a resident of the compound, according to this report.
 Now, the Gazette has obtained fil footage made on May 24, 1995, by an
Oklahoma news service that clearly shows Strassmeir walking around in the
Elohim City compound, armed with a pistol in a leg holster.  Also captured
on another news clip made days earlier was Michael Brescia-- the young man
eyewitnesses in Kansas have described to this newspaper as "John Doe #2,"
wanted for questioning in connection with the Oklahoma City bombing.
Brescia, coincidentally, was Strassmeir's roommate at Elohim City.

The uncovering of such facts is proving frustrating to some Oklahoma
lawmen, who are puzzled and angry that Strassmeir and others have
apparently never been questioned in a timely manner by federal
authorities.

Here's what on law enforcement officer said: "We found the axle from the
truck that led to Junction City and McVeigh.  Our Highway Patrolman
arrested McVeigh.  And that arrest led to Terry Nichols and Mike
Fortier...
"Since then, nothing in this investigation has accomplished anything.  But
we're told by the Bureau that Strassmeir and his buddies are not
important.
"Bull____!!"

Within 36 hours of the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building,
senior officials at the ATF and FBI were provided intelligence on
Strassmeir from Oklahoma law enforcement members, this newspaper has
learned.

In mid-May, 1995, a written report from the FBI detailed those
suspicions from Oklahoma terrorism experts concerning Strassmeir. That
classified document set out these facts: That Strassmeir was a German
citizen and his father a powerful former member of the German
parliament... that he was in the German military... that he was the
principal militia trainer at Elohim City, a redoubt of the Christian
Identity Movement.

Federal officials were also advised that the Immigration and
Naturalization Service had an outstanding warrant for Strassmeir's
arrest for failing to leave the U.S. when his visa expired. Additional
facts were also broached in the documents sent to federal authorities.

They should be considered within the context of former Elohim City
resident Richard Wayne Snell, whose death sentence in an Arkansas prison
was carried out just hours after the Oklahoma City bombing-- and may
have inspired it, some knowledgeable observers contend.

Snell told Arkansas prison officials just four days before his scheduled
execution that there would be a bombing on the day of his death. He
didn't say where, but Snell and another well-known radical, James
Ellison, had cased the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma
City back in the early 1980s.

The report to the FBI from state intelligence observers noted that
Strassmeir was alleged to train platoon-sized groups consisting of 30 to
40 individual militia members from throughout the U.S. every three
months at Elohim City... that Strassmeir was observed at Elohim City as
recently as two weeks prior to that... that Strassmeir had in the past
attempted to purchase a 747 aircraft from Lufthansa Airlines... that in
1992, some 960 yards of concrete was transported to Elohim City via 122
concrete trucks, presumably for bunkers and weapons storage
facilities... that the compound was believed to be generating income
through the sale of illegal drugs produced on the 400-acre compound...
and that a confidential source advised that another resident of Elohim
City bore a striking resemblance to "John Doe #2," then being sought by
federal authorities."

(TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Well, well, so the Oklahoma authorities told the
FBI that Brescia was a probable John Doe #2 right after the bombing.
After all that's happened since... all of the revelations about Brescia,
the Midwestern bank bandits, the Muellers.... WHY HASN'T THE FBI TAKEN
BRESCIA IN FOR SERIOUS QUESTIONING, LINEUPS, ETC.?!?!?!?!?!? What does
it take to get the FBI to move? Why haven't the major news media outlets
been screaming about this? Once you know the horrible questions, how can
you rest without knowing the terrifying answers?)

STRASSMEIR, BRESCIA THERE 

Thus, a month after the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building,
Strassmeir was still a resident of the compound, according to this
report. Now, the Gazette has obtained file footage made on May 24, 1995,
by an Oklahoma news service that clearly shows Strassmeir walking around
in the Elohim City compound, armed with a pistol in a leg holster. Also
captured on another news clip made days earlier was Michael Brescia--
the young man eyewitnesses in Kansas have described to this newspaper as
"John Doe #2," wanted for questioning in connection with the Oklahoma
City bombing. Brescia, coincidentally, was Strassmeir's roommate at
Elohim City.

The uncovering of such facts is proving frustrating to some Oklahoma
lawmen, who are puzzled and angry that Strassmeir and others have
apparently never been questioned in a timely manner by federal
authorities.

Here's what one law enforcement officer said: "We found the axle from
the truck that led to Junction City and McVeigh. Our Highway Patrolman
arrested McVeigh. And that arrest led to Terry Nichols and Mike
Fortier... "Since then, nothing in this investigation has accomplished
anything. But we're told by the Bureau that Strassmeir and his buddies
are not important. "Bull____!!"

By doing its job more rigorously, the FBI could raise serious issues for
Clinton's re-election. As we have indicated in past issues, Clinton's
greatest vulnerability may lie in evidence that the Oklahoma bombing was
a government sting operation that went awry. Powerful evidence to this
effect has been assembled by Glenn and Kathy Wilburn of Oklahoma City
(the grandparents of two victims of the bombing).

For example, the Wilburns believe that they have identified the
mysterious and long-missing witness, "John Doe II," as Mike Brescia.
Brescia is a Pennsylvania native who dropped out of LaSalle University
in his third year and went to the Ozarks to join the armed religious
cult at Elohim City. Brescia was the roommate of Andreas Strassmeir, a
former German Army officer and the man London's Sunday Telegraph reports
"The Wilburns have announced that they plan to name in a lawsuit as a
'U.S. federal informant with material knowledge of the bombing.'" Three
witnesses at the Ryder truck agency where the vehicle used in the blast
was rented are adamant that they saw McVeigh there with "John Doe II."

The day after the bombing, when the artists sketches of "John Doe I" and
"John Doe II" were widely circulating, two witnesses came forward to
tell the F.B.I they knew both "John Does." One of the witnesses, a
former girl friend of bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh, told the F.B.I.
that "John Doe II" was a man named "Mike" with a tattoo on his left arm
(John Doe II was described as having such a tattoo). The girl friend's
mother, Connie Smith, also identified "John Doe II" as a "friend of
McVeigh."

Smith told The Telegraph that the F.B.I. was not receptive to her
testimony: "The F.B.I. made me feel guilty, then ignorant, as if I
didn't know what I was saying. Then, later, I tried to call in with more
information and they wouldn't even talk to me."

Notwithstanding the leads provided by these witnesses and others, the
Justice Department announced that "John Doe II" was a soldier who merely
happened to visit the rental truck agency a day after McVeigh, and was
in no way related to the case.

The evidence compiled by the Wilburns suggests otherwise. They wonder
why the F.B.I. showed so little interest in following up leads pointing
to Brescia as as "John Doe II". Experts familiar with the evidence think
they know. Cases involving violence or planned violence by militias from
around the U.S. show a recurring theme of government penetration and
infiltration of militia groups. For example, testimony in the Musgoge
bombing case showed that the F.B.I. was literally paying the operating
expenses, including phone bills for the Tri-State Militia. The strong
implication is that the F.B.I. has failed to follow through on leads
that would expose the involvement of federal agents or informants in the
Oklahoma City bombing. But this will become a matter of public record in
due course anyway. A number of mainstream news organizations have
assigned reporters to look into the Wilburns' allegations. F.B.I.
Director Freeh and other thinking leaders in the F.B.I. may wish to
rescue the F.B.I.'s reputation and their own by returning to the
Oklahoma bombing investigation and doing a more credible job. The F.B.I.
will not wish to be categorized as a federal version of the corrupt
Arkansas state police, which was thoroughly politicized during the
Clinton and Tucker era.

Informed sources tell SI that Arkansas's incoming governor, Mike
Huckabee, has already begun making plans to clean out the corrupt
leadership in the state police. SI's opinion: the F.B.I.'s top
leadership could soon take steps to prevent the F.B.I. from being
thoroughly sullied by association with efforts to cover up for the
Clintons.

It is also probable that some members of the F.B.I. could make a useful
contribution to the investigation of the death of Vince Foster At least
four members of Congress, from both sides of the aisle, have written to
Director Freeh to inquire about the harassment of Foster case witness
Patrick Knowlton. The fact that federal agents have harassed Knowlton
will be proved in a soon-to-be-filed lawsuit.

EDITORIAL

Well, I had a nice chat with Ambrose Evans-Pritchard [Aug. 1, 1996] and
among the topics of conversation was the central question: Will any of
the revelations about the Clinton administration's scandals (of which
OKC is but one, albeit the biggest) make any difference at the polls in
November? Because of the patent failures of his American media brethren,
Ambrose despaired of any change in administration being likely, with the
comment that at any rate he would be returning to England before "your
country becomes half banana republic and half police state."

"But Ambrose", I asked, "if the torch of liberty flickers and dies here,
who then will rekindle it?" He had no answer.

Twice in this century that torch flickered everywhere else but in
America. Refugees have periodically flowed into this country, including
some of the best and brightest of humanity, fleeing murderous tyranny.
Some stayed here, but many went home after their independence was re-won
with American blood and sacrifice. But if we lose to corrupt tyrants
HERE, where then will liberty's refugees run? Who will rekindle the
flame? In what other nation of earth does the tree of liberty grow
unchoked by the weeds of corrupt elitism and "democratic" socialism or
unpoisoned by the foul earth of collectivist dictatorship? Even here the
sad old liberty tree, once proud and vibrant, is shedding limbs and
tottering from liberal dry-rot. When we have allowed her to die, where
will free men and women shelter from the storms of despotism?

I tell you, my fellow Americans, THERE IS NO OTHER SUCH PLACE AS THIS.
If we lose the battle for republican democracy here and now, we have
lost it everywhere and for generations to come. What other country would
shelter a Radio Free America, host a republican government-in-exile, or
provide arms and aid to American Freedom Fighters? There is none. There
is no place to run, and little place to hide.

We are in this spot because for a generation or two we have trusted
corrupt leaders of both parties, allowed others to do our thinking for
us, and let our citizenship tools rust in the corner. Our politicians
serve the powerful few, not the public weal. Our "watchdog" press has
become a toothless lapdog serving the administration, any
administration. Our courts serve the rich, the politically
well-connected and the "favored" class of the month. Our schools, once
the proud molder of informed citizenry, now churn out politically-
correct amnesiacs suitable only for manipulation by employer, politician
and union boss. Our children know Beavis and Butthead but not Paul
Revere and Patrick Henry. We have allowed cynical politicians to use
racism to divide us from ourselves and our common history and values.
And though we may have fought these trends ourselves, and shouted our
opposition from the highest tree in town, still it has not been enough. 

There are some who say that they see the wrath of God in the coming
storm... the just punishment of a wicked and willful people who have
turned their faces from Him. As it happens, I may believe that myself.
But though I do not presume to know the will of God, nor what He has in
store for us as a people, I know well the struggle between good and evil
that is currently being waged for the hearts, minds, and souls of the
citizens of the American republic.

I know that in the constitutional militia movement there are men and
women of all races, creeds and religions. I celebrate that fact, for it
is our greatest strength. We have within us the ability to defeat the
enemies of our Republic if we will just recognize our strengths and use
them-- Now, today, without bloodshed. We can do it in the political
arena and in the court of public opinion by simply turning on the
lights, telling the truth and exposing the evildoers. If we fail to do
this, we will be forced by the inevitable conflict between our
principles and the unconstitutional actions of an emboldened second
Clinton adminstration to resist, even if another shot is "heard round
the world". It is a civil war that we may well lose, but that we can
avoid by simply exercising vigorously the tools of our citizenship that
the Founders bequeathed us. We may fail, but we must try.

I cannot believe that the majority of the American people have
themselves grown so corrupt and lazy that they will not act forcefully
once they understand what was perpretrated at Oklahoma City with the
assistance, willing or unwilling, of their government. They will not
think kindly of the cover-up that has followed OKC and which extends to
the highest levels of the Administration. The Clinton Administration, to
paraphrase Strategic Investment newsletter, will be political "toast."
While I do not have any illusions about Bob Dole, I think it preferable
that we continue the political battle for our liberties after Dole's
Inauguration rather than fighting in the streets after the Clinton
Second Inaugural. Call me old-fashioned. Call me anything you like, but
help me get the truth out about OKC. The republic you save may be your
own.

TITLED: "DEAD MEN DON'T TALK BUT KEVIN McCARTHY WILL.", OR: "COMMANDER
PEDRO AND HIS LOST PLANET ARYANS."

We present for your amusement and edification this evening in Parts 15 &
16, five articles regarding the "Midwestern Bank Bandits", details of
their escapades, and testimony from the pre-trial hearings as covered in
the Village Voice, the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch and the Philadelphia
Inquirer. 

Some time ago, we were informed by a federal law enforcement source that
some items taken in the FBI search of the bank robber's storage locker
in Shawnee, Kansas, linked these "Aryan Republican Army" bozos to
Michael Brescia, our elusive John Doe #2, who is himself linked to
Andreas Strassmeir. An analysis of the movements of the bank bandits and
of those of Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols also shows some interesting
similarities, which will be detailed in an upcoming "JD#2".

It is singularly interesting that complete inventories for all of the
searched residences, vehicles and storage lockers of the "Lost Planet
Aryans" have been submitted at the "Commander Pedro" Langan preliminary
hearing save one-- only a summary of the items taken from the Shawnee,
Kansas locker was produced by the FBI. What'ch ya hidin', FBI?
"Commander Pedro", call your lawyer! How many prosecutions is the FBI
going to deliberately blow just to try to keep a lid on Oklahoma City?

DEAD MEN DON'T TALK
"What Secrets Did Richard Guthrie Take With him to His Grave?"

Washington, D.C.-- Richard Lee Guthrie, Jr., a key figure in the
government's ongoing inquiries into the white power underground was
found dead last Friday morning in a Covington, Kentucky, jail cell. The
U.S. Marshal's office had placed him there to await sentencing for his
role in a string of Midwest bank robberies that netted some $250,000.
Guthrie had just cut a deal to testify for the government against his
former gang members.

According to the U.S. Marshals' office, Guthrie "apparently hanged
himself with a bedsheet he tied to a ceiling air vent." He had left two
notes, one to his attorney, the other to his brother. The contents were
not divulged. W. Kelly Johnson, an assistant federal public defender,
who talked to Guthrie last Monday, said the defendant was not on a
suicide watch, because "no one noticed anything that indicated he was
having any problems." The Marshals' office says its "continuing to
investigate the circumstances surrounding Guthrie's death."

Guthrie was of special interest to the government because of what he
said he did with the money from the bank robberies. Guthrie had pleaded
guilty to 19 holdups in seven states, and, in at least one interview,
claimed to have given the stolen money to white power groups. There has
long been speculation that the Oklahoma City bombing was funded through
a series of far right robberies. Federal investigators have looked into
connections between the bomb plot and the 1994 robbery of an Arkansas
gun dealer. Guthrie's assertion of funding far right groups raises the
possibility of a link between the Midwest bank robberies and the
Oklahoma bombing, though it is impossible to say for certain whether any
of the stolen money-- none of which has been found-- was used to set up
the attack.

In a sealed plea bargain agreement, Guthrie promised to provide the
government with information about organizations "whose goal is the
overthrow of the U.S. government or engage in domestic terrorism."
Guthrie told the Los Angeles Times in a phone call last Thursday that he
was planning to write a book that goes "a lot more deeper" than the
robberies expounding about his life and the white supremacist movement.

(TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: OK, so let's see if I got this right-- Guthrie
tells the LA Times that he's looking forward to writing a "tell-all"
book about the "movement" the day before he does the Nuremberg dance
with a bedsheet in his cell. I wonder if Guthrie had told the substance
of what he knew to the LA Times instead of hinting at deep, dark secrets
over a monitored jail phone, would he be alive today? A cautionary
question to guys like Mark Thomas and Dennis Mahon......., oh, yeah, and
you too, Kirk.)

Prosecutors had recommended that Guthrie serve no more than 30 years in
prison for the 1994 and 1995 robberies if he agreed to testify against
three other men awaiting trial for some of the same crimes.

Two accomplices of Guthrie, Scott Stedeford and Kevin McCarthy, are also
acquaintances of Pennsylvania Aryan Nations' leader Mark Thomas, a
longtime figure in the white power movement. Before he died, Guthrie
said he met McCarthy at Thomas' home outside Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Guthrie also visited the Aryan Nations' headquarters in Hayden Lake,
Idaho in 1991, according to former Nations' spokesman Floyd Cochran.
Dennis Mahon, a Tulsa, Oklahoma Klan leader who says he is a friend of
both Thomas and McCarthy, says Guthrie lived with Thomas for over a
month. Stedeford, McCarthy, and Thomas has all been visitors to Elohim
City, a Christian Identity compound in eastern Oklahoma that has been
visited by many leaders of the movement. Accused Oklahoma city bomber
Timothy McVeigh made a phone call to Elohim City just days before the
blast. Thomas, when contacted by the Voice, declined to comment.

Among far right devotees, the discussion is all about why Guthrie would
choose to kill himself having just plea bargained with the government.
In various Internet bulletins, the general belief is that Guthrie was
killed before he could tell all.

criminal funding to white power groups.

HOUSE ALLEGEDLY USED BY BANK GANG HAD BOOBY TRAP.

One of the pipe bombs discovered in a South Side duplex allegedly used
as a "safe house" for the Midwestern Bank Bandits was booby-trapped with
a motion-sensitive switch, testimony yesterday at a federal hearing
revealed.

bombs? Somebody called me for the umpteenth time the other day and asked
me what profile the Atlanta bomber likely fit. "Well," I said, "based on

looking at a below-average-intelligence hater with an ATF snitch
whispering in his left ear.")

Terry T. Dillon, a demolitions expert with the Columbus Fire Division,
told U.S. District Judge John D. Holschuh that on Jan. 18 he and two
other explosives technicians found 10 pipe bombs and four grenades at
585 Reinhard Avenue. An 11th pipe bomb and a fifth grenade were found in
a van behind the duplex, Dillon said.

The grenades and nine of the pipe bombs were live, he said. The other
pipe bombs were not filled with explosives, he said. 

A highly sensitive mercury switch was attached to one of the live bombs
found in the house, Dillon testified. Such switches are used as booby
traps so that a bomb explodes as soon as it is moved, he said.

His team defused the switch, Dillon testified. All of the live bombs and
grenades were detonated later.

It took Dillon's team 17 hours to clear the residence of dangerous
ordnance, he testified. "This was considered a hot zone," Dillon said.
Also found in the house or van were semiautomatic guns, ammunition,
blasting caps, gunpowder and a one-gallon can filled with nitromethane,
a highly flammable chemical, Dillon and others testified. The testimony
came during the second day of a hearing to determine what evidence can
be presented at the Aug. 5 trial of Peter "Commander Pedro" Langan, 38.

Authorities have accused Langan of being a leader of the Midwestern Bank
Bandits, a gang suspected of robbing about 20 banks in Ohio, and six
other states in 1994 and 1995. Langan was arrested Jan. 18 after a brief
shootout with agents at the rear of the Reinhard Avenue house. He is
charged with five federal counts stemming from the 1994 robberies of a
Columbus bank and a bank in Springdale, Ohio. Langan is also charged
with seven counts involving the shootout.

Memebrs of the gang left live bombs in banks and getaway cars after
their robberies in an effort to divert police, authorities have said.
Several members of the gang also have been linked to white-supremacist,
anti-government groups. In January, Langan told reporters he founded the
Aryan Republican Army, a radical anti-government organization.

Richard Lee Guthrie, 38, another suspected gang leader, who had pleaded
guilty to 19 robberies, was found hanged in his Kentucky jail cell
Friday. Authorities said he apparently committed suicide.

Two other suspected gang members-- Kevin Mccarthy, 18, and Scott A.
Stedeford, 27-- were arrested in May near Philadelphia. A fifth suspect,
identified in January by the FBI as Jim Thompson, has been reported as
still at large. But testimony yesterday raised questions about
Thompson's existence.

Missouri FBI agent James Edwards testified that Stedeford used the alias
of Jim Thompson while accompanying Langan and Guthrie. Edwards did not
elaborate. Federal prosecutors and other FBI agents in the courthouse
yesterday refused to comment on Thompson.

Testimony from FBI agent Edward Woods, revealed that authorities were
aided in their investigation by a Cincinnati man named Shawn Kenney. FBI
agents interviewed Kenney 12 days before they arrested Guthrie in
Cincinnati on Jan. 15, Woods testified. Kenney was a friend of both
Langan and Guthrie, Woods added. He did not detail what information
Kenney provided.

BANK BANDITS HAD STOCKPILE OF WEAPONS, RECORDS SHOW

The suspects in a string of Midwestern bank robberies collected enough
weaponry to stock a good-sized gun store, documents made public last
week in U.S. District Court reveal. The records also suggest that the
alleged members of the so-called Midwestern Bank Bandits:

**Read everything from the Bible and Shakespearean plays to
white-supremacist literature.

**Compiled an array of fake identification documents and law enforcement
badges and ID cards.

**Extensively researched facts about bombs, guns and chemicals.

The revelations are contained in itemized lists of materials federal
agents confiscated in January and February from houses, storage lockers
and vehicles used by the suspects and their relatives in Columbus;
Cincinnati; St. Louis; Joplin, Mo.; and Shawnee, Kansas. The lists were
made public when they were introduced as evidence during a three-day
pretrial hearing before Judge John D. Holschuh in the case of Peter
"Commander Pedro" Langan.

Langan, 38, suspected of leading the bandits, was arrested Jan. 18 after
a brief shootout with Federal agents on the South Side. His trial on
bank robbery and assault charges is to begin August 5 in Columbus.

One of Langan's alleged accomplices, Richard Lee Guthrie, 38, had
pleaded guilty in Cincinnati to 19 robberies and agreed to testify
against Langan. Guthrie, however, was found hanged July 12 in his
Kentucky jail cell, the victim of an apparent suicide. Two other
suspects-- Kevin McCarthy, 18, and Scott A. Stedeford, 27-- were
arrested in May near Philadelphia.

Among the weapons confiscated are a rocket launcher, 12 semiautomatic
pistols, a revolver, a 12 gauge shotgun, five rifles, a BB gun, five
arrows, three knives, at least 12 pipe bombs and at least seven hand
grenades. Also seized were thousands of bullets of various calibers, two
pairs of handcuffs, two bulletproof vests, gasmasks and a variety of
bomb-making equipment such as pipes, gunpowder, timers, switches, wires,
primers and blasting caps.

Reading material seized includes two Bibles, "The Complete Works of
Shakespeare", "A Brief History of Ancient Peoples", a history of Andrew
Jackson, quotations from Mao tse-Tung, "Around the World With Kipling",
and G. Gordon Liddy's "Will." Some of the reading material reflects the
bandits' alleged links to white-supremacist terrorist groups, including
"The Anarchist Cookbook", a handbook from the Irish Republican Army,
"Our Nordic Race", Ku Klux Klan pamphlets and literature about the Aryan
Nation.

Authorities also seized dozens of manuals and magazines on guns,
chemicals, ammunition and explosives.

The suspects, believed responsible for bank robberies in seven
Midwestern states over more than two years, also showed an interest in
fake identifications. An ID portfolio complied under the name of Joseph
A. Mackrell, Jr. was confiscated. It includes birth certificates from
Ohio and New York, a South Dakota drivers license, a U.S. Marshals
Service ID card, ID cards from the U.S. Departments of Justice and
Energy, a Social Security card, a Maine ID card and a business card for
GTE Fibre Optics.

Other seized ID materials include a book on U.S. identity documents, 34
notary public seals, six baptismal certificates, at least 18 birth
certificates, Social Security cards, and blank passport application
forms. Authorities confiscated license plates and drivers licenses from
Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, Kansas, South Dakota and Maryland.

Also collected were six aerial flares, a citizens-band radio and three
antennas, a blue police strobe light, pagers, a hacksaw, a crow bar,
bolt cutters and rope. The suspects seemingly were prepared for life in
the wilds. Authorities found survivalist manuals, canteens,
water-purification tablets, 10 ready-to-eat meals, a first-aid kit,
bandages, a compass, binoculars and a variety of outdoor clothing.

Also found were wigs, ski masks and Halloween masks depicting Presidents
Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, Count Dracula, Frankenstein and
witches.

SUSPECT DETAILS HOW GANG WORKED

A 19-year-old former white supremacist testified yesterday in Columbus
that he accompanied Peter "Commander Pedro" Langan on six bank robberies
in 1994 and 1995.

In riveting testimony in U.S. District Court, Kevin McCarthy, who was
arrested in May in Philadelphia, also said that:

** He was introduced to Langan in October or November 1994 by Mark
Thomas, a white supremacist from Allentown, Pa., during a meeting in a
Van Buren, Okla., restaurant.

place in Van Buren, ARKANSAS, just up the road from Elohim City, just
down the road from "Identity Indian Country" where the Muellers and
others lived. As the wise man said, "All roads lead to Elohim." Another
wise man called Elohim City a "Nazi Switzerland" because of the
reluctance of Oklahoma authorities to intervene after the standoff in
the eighties, any criminal enterprise was safe from prying eyes and
intervention. You may recall that Willie Ray Lampley wanted to go out to
Elohim and test his bomb-making ability before he got busted. All roads
lead to Elohim, even the one that eventually leads to the federal
building in Oklahoma City.)

**During the meeting, Langan boasted that he had already robbed 12
banks. "He wanted me to know what I was getting involved in," McCarthy
told Judge John D. Holschuh.

** He joined Langan's gang, the so-called Midwestern Bank Bandits,
shortly after the Oklahoma (READ: ARKANSAS) meeting. The four-member
gang also called itself the Aryan Republican Army.

** The gang's goal was "to open the door to the overthrow of the United
States government." He no longer believes in white supremacy or the
overthrow of the government.

to the OKC bomb, these activities are all of a piece. The only
difference is that the Aryans are following one sheet of music, but the

republic, half police-state" that Ambrose Evans-Pritchard warned of that

Hitler was voted in, so too was Clinton. But as Clinton's audience is
more sophisticated than Hitler's, so too are his and his cronies'
methods. Still, the Reichstag Fire and the Oklahoma City bombing seem at
this juncture to be not so far apart after all.)

** A rift within the gang developed in late 1995. McCarthy and another
gang member, Scott A. Stedeford, 27, became angry with a third member,
Richard Lee Guthrie, 38. "Mr. Guthrie had made a few mistakes," McCarthy
said. McCarthy and Stedeford refused to participate in more bank
robberies with Guthrie. "We weren't on speaking terms."

Earlier this year, Guthrie pleaded guilty to 19 robberies and agreed to
testify against Langan and other gang members. However, Guthrie was
found hanged last month in his Kentucky jail cell, an apparent suicide.

** Each gang member had specific duties. Langan's job was to plan bank
heists.

** Each gang member got an equal share of money from robberies. Some of
the holdup money was put away for expenses. And some was saved "to do
other acts." While McCarthy did not elaborate, authorities are
investigating allegations that the gang had links to domestic terrorist
organizations.

the matter. An honest accounting by the FBI of the items found in the
Shawnee storage locker could go a long way to demonstrating a connection
between "The Lost Planet Aryans" and the Oklahoma City bombing. Our
federal law enforcement sources say there are items seized in that
locker that tie directly to Michael Brescia, our elusive John Doe #2,
who of course leads to our favorite ATF provocateur, Andreas Strassmeir.
Did money from the bank robberies fund OKC? When will the FBI quit
covering up?!?!?)

** Langan had built a pipe bomb he dubbed "Commander Pedro's Mark II"
that was carried in bank robberies. The bomb, equipped with a wooden
handle and fuse, was to be used if the gang was chased or stopped by
police. Federal agents discovered the bomb behind the front seat of a
van that Langan was using when he was arrested Jan. 18 at the rear of
585 Reinhard Ave. Langan is charged with shooting at agents from the van
during his arrest. Langan was slightly injured in the gun battle. No law
enforcement officers were hurt.

A federal grand jury sitting in Columbus issued a twelve-count
indictment against Langan, 38, in connection with the shootout and a
bank robbery in Columbus and another in Springdale, Ohio, in 1994. 

McCarthy testified during the fifth day of a pretrial hearing. The
hearing is to consider evidence the government collected in its
investigation of Langan and the gang. Langan's trial is scheduled to
begin in Columbus on October 7.

McCarthy said one of the six banks he robbed with Langan was in a Toledo
suburb. McCarthy did not give details of the other five robberies.
Langan, 38, stared at McCarthy throughout the 19 year old's testimony.
In contrast, McCarthy looked at Langan once, while he was identifying
Langan. McCarthy showed no expression while testifying in a monotone.

McCarthy described himself as a former drug abuser who first sent by his
parents to a rehabilitation center at the age of 12. He has not used
drugs in the past four years, he said.

McCarthy said he signed a plea bargain June 25, agreeing to plead guilty
to one count each of bank robbery, conspiracy and illegal use of
firearms. The plea bargain also requires him to "testify truthfully"
about the activities of other gang members, including Langan, McCarthy
testified. He hopes his cooperation will earn him a leniency motion from
the government, he said.

Mark Thomas, 44, is a leader of the Aryan Nations and Christian
Identity, two national white-supremacist groups. In a September speech
in Boyertown, Pa., Thomas advocated returning America to its Christian
principles, according to the Allentown MORNING CALL. Five members of the
audience were dressed up in Ku Klux Klan gard, the newspaper reported.

Christian Identity operates a 1,000-acre compound in Oklahoma called
Elohim City. Timothy McVeigh, accused of bombing the federal building in
Oklahoma City, phoned Elohim City before the explosion, authorities have
said. 

People quoted by the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER last month described Thomas
as McCarthy's mentor. One person in the INQUIRER report said Thomas took
McCarthy to Elohim City. Thomas denied this, the INQUIRER reported.

In other testimony yesterday, FBI agents Ed Woods and Roger Wilson
testified that the authorities learned of the existence of a gang
storage locker in Shawnee, Kansas from Langan himself. Langan told the
agents of the locker in exchange for a cigarette and a cup of coffee,
the agents said. The two agents were interviewing Langan in the Franklin
County jail shortly after his arrest. The locker was later found to
contain firearms, pipe bombs and masks, according to court records.

ON THE TRAIL OF JOHN DOE #2

        Who is John Doe #2 and why hasn't the government found 
him?  A former German military officer may hold the key to Doe's 
identity, but the FBI reportedly isn't very interested in this 
lead.  Why is John Doe #2 important?  The reason is he is the 
alleged "helper" and mystery man who may have aided Tim McVeigh 
in the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal building on April 19, 
1995 which killed 168 people.  
 
        Andreas Strassmeir may know who John Doe #2 is, but he's 
not talking and has left the country.  Now living in Germany, 
Strassmeir, age 36, not only met Tim McVeigh, but also lived at a 
white supremacist compound in Oklahoma.  John Doe #2 is alleged 
to have been Strassmeir's roommate at Elohim City, OK, an 
"intentional community" of Chistian Identity believers and 
sometime home to many activists in neo-Nazi and other extreme 
right wing causes.  
 
        Strassmeir has been interviewed in Germany by American 
television network news and other American news media.  He's also 
the subject of a court suit filed by families of the victims and 
survivors of the OKC bombing who allege he knows more than he's 
talking about to the press. 
 
        One of the most startling pieces of information to turn 
up is that John Doe #2 may not be "middle eastern" in appearance, 
but may be Italian.  This could account for the widespread 
reports of a "swarthy" man who was identified as having breakfast 
with McVeigh and Nichols at the Santa Fe Diner in Herrington, KS, 
on April 18, 1995.  The same description is the basis for the FBI 
composite drawing circulated all over the country.  He is 
believed to have been with McVeigh at the time he rented the 
Ryder truck used in the bombing.  John Doe #2 has not yet been 
found.  In a series of Internet posting activists within the
militia movement have alleged he is Michael Brescia of 
Philadelphia, PA [Judy Thomas, Kansas City Star, 6/23/96; and
Ambrose Evans Pritchard, London Sunday Telegraph, 6/30/96]
Brescia once lived at Elohim City as Strassmeir's roommate, but
is now missing and believed fled to Canada.
 
        Strassmeir is closely linked with attorney Kirk Lyons who 
has defended many US neo-Nazis in court proceedings.  Lyons, who
has deep contacts with neo-Nazis in Germany, also defended Louis
Beam, who coined the idea of "leaderless resistance." This 
strategy is thought to be behind a nationally significant series 
of abortion clinic fire bombings alleged to have been carried out 
by militia supporters or sympathizers.  It may have been the 
inspiration for the OKC bombing. 
 
        What puts Strassmeir in the crosshairs of analysis is his
admitted meetings with McVeigh not only at a Tulsa, OK, gun show 
in April 1993, but also a second time in 1994 at the first 
anniversary service at Mt. Carmel near Waco, TX, where more than 
80 Branch Davidians died April 19, 1993.  Strassmeir has a number 
of ambiguous and confusing roles.
 
        McVeigh telephoned Elohim City on April 5, 1995, asking 
to speak to Strassmeir who was living there at the time.  The 
call was made the same day McVeigh rented the Ryder truck which 
was eventually blown up in front of the Murrah Federal Office 
Building.  However, Strassmeir says through his attorney, Kirk 
Lyons, that he didn't take the call and didn't know about it 
until much later.  
 
        Elohim City has so many white supremacists with violent 
backgrounds associated with it that it could be the next place 
involved in a confrontation with law enforcement agencys like 
those involving the Monatna Freemen, Texas Branch Davidians, and 
Idaho's Randy Weaver at Ruby Ridge.  
 
        Many of the mysteries associated with the OKC bombing 
have their trails running to ground and disappearing at Elohim 
City.  These include the identity of John Doe #2, the mystery of 
the second Ryder Truck, McVeigh's phone call, and links to 
various underground cells of the militia movement like Ray 
Lampley, convicted earlier this month of planning to blow up the 
office of the SPLC and ADL.  The Aryan Republican Army Bank
robbers, including Kevin McCarthy and Richard Guthrie, also
stayed at Elohim City at one time, and may have been there the
same time as Strassmeir.
 
        A key mystery is there are too many vehicles and not 
enough people accounted for in front of the OKC Federal Bldg the 
morning of April 19th.  For instance, who drove McVeigh's car to 
Oklahoma City if McVeigh and Nichols were in the Ryder Rental 
truck that carried the explosive?  If Nichols drove the car, who 
was in the truck with McVeigh? 
 
        Is Strassmeir the key to these mysteries or is he a red 
herring? Is Strassmeir a real link to America's underground neo-
Nazi movement or is he being touted part of a disinformation 
strategy by the McVeigh defense team to sow confusion in the 
minds of potential jurors and thus spare McVeigh and Nichols from 
the death penalty?  
 
        Some think he's an agent of the government, and other
think he's just a "soldier of fortune" type who hung out with the
wrong people.  An unresolved question is how Strassmeir is linked
to Vincent Petruskie, a former U.S. Air Force Colonel who spent
much of his career in counter-intelligence assignments.  When
Strassmeir was stopped for a traffic check by the Oklahoma State
Police in 1992 copies of correspondence with Petruskie were found
in the car's trunk.
 
        For his part, Petruskie has been quoted by several
sources as saying he helped Strassmeir come to this country to
participate in a reenactment of the US Civil War battle of
Gettysburg held in 1989.  Strassmeir's letters to the now
retired Air Force Colonel asked for help in obtaining employment
with various law enforcement agencies of the Federal government.
Petruskie is quoted as saying none of the job leads panned out
beause Strassmeir did not have a "green card," only a tourist
visa.  Despite his temorary status, Strassmeir managed to stay
in the US for nearly eight years.
 
        Strassmeir doesn't look anything like the composite 
drawing of John Doe #2, even with a baseball cap on his head.  
It's what's inside his head that people want to know.
