Pittsburgh Post-Gazette September 18, 1993, Saturday, SOONER EDITION SECTION: EDITORIAL, Pg. B2 LENGTH: 405 words HEADLINE: WILL IS IGNORANT OF BASIC FACTS OF THE HOLOCAUST BYLINE: MARK WEBER EDITOR, JOURNAL OF HISTORICAL REVIEW INSTITUTE FOR HISTORICAL REVIEW NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. BODY: George F. Will's claim that I, and other ''Holocaust deniers, torture the past in the hope of making the future safe for torturers'' is contemptible (''Ignorance, Anti-Semitism and 'Scholarship,' '' Perspectives, Aug. 30). University professors such as Arthur Butz and Robert Faurisson, historians such as David Irving and Harry Elmer Barnes, former concentration-camp inmates such as Paul Rassinier and American gas-chamber specialist Fred Leuchter did not decide to reject the Holocaust extermination story -- thereby risking public censure, and worse -- because their motives are evil, but rather on the basis of a sincere and thoughtful evaluation of the evidence. In his mean-spirited polemic, Will attributes words to me that are either invented or are crass distortions of remarks ripped from their context. Similarly, his portrayal of the arguments of Holocaust ''deniers'' is grotesquely inaccurate. I do not contend -- as Will so simplistically puts it -- that ''the Holocaust never happened.'' Every serious revisionist readily acknowledges that Europe's Jews endured a terrible catastrophe during World War II. Will seems to think that his visits to the sites of three wartime camps, and a reading of some secondary literature, make him something of an expert on this subject. As he revealed during our Aug. 19 luncheon meeting, though, he is remarkably ignorant of basic facts of Holocaust history. Will was not aware, for example, that Anne Frank -- along with others in her family -- had ''survived'' Auschwitz internment. (She later died in Bergen-Belsen, a victim of typhus). He was completely unfamiliar with the Einsatzgruppen -- the special German security police units that operated in the occupied Soviet territories. Will told me that he accepts as accurate and reliable the ''testimony'' of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Hoss, unaware that this important piece of Holocaust evidence was obtained by torture, and that, on a number of key points, it is not even consistent with the current version of the Auschwitz extermination story. Will also acknowledged his ignorance of the many German wartime documents that plainly show that the ''Final Solution'' policy was not one of extermination. Will's attempt to portray Holocaust revisionism as part of a vast anti- Semitic conspiracy is not only inaccurate, it is an insult to the growing number of Jews who support the revisionist view.
