BERNE, Switzerland (Reuter) - A right-wing proposal to clamp down on the number of foreigners allowed to live in Switzerland has gained enough signatures for a referendum, the government said Thursday. The proposal would limit non-Swiss nationals to 18 percent of the population, down from the current level of nearly 20 percent of the seven million-strong population. ``If the fixed limit of 18 percent is exceeded at the time that Article 69 (the proposal) takes effect, this will be compensated for as quickly as possible through the voluntary emigration of foreigners,'' the proposal states. The petition had 125,097 valid signatures, safely over the minimum of 100,000 required to call a vote under the Swiss system of direct democracy, a statement from the Federal Chancellery said. However, the government has until August 1997 to present its views and could agree on a compromise version. Another one or two years could pass before the referendum is actually held. Swiss voters last December overwhelmingly approved new police powers to crack down on asylum-seekers and illegal foreigners. In June, voters rejected a government proposal to make it easier for foreigners to buy property in Swizerland. Official figures show 62.5 percent of non-Swiss residents come from western and southern Europe and another 21.9 percent >from former Yugoslavia. The vast majority of signatures came from the bigger and economically stronger German-speaking part of Switzerland, home to big and medium-sized industries with a higher percentage of foreigners. Less than 5,000 signatures came from Francophone areas and the sole Italian-speaking canton, Ticino. -- gregs SEMPER FIDELIS From gregs@inforamp.net Thu Dec 14 17:27:47 PST 1995 Article: 61564 of can.general Path: nizkor.almanac.bc.ca!news.island.net!news.bctel.net!news.cyberstore.ca!math.ohio-state.edu!howland.reston.ans.net!swrinde!hookup!news.nstn.ca!inforamp.net!ts6-16.inforamp.net!user From: gregs@inforamp.net (GREGS) Newsgroups: soc.culture.canada,can.general,can.politics,alt.politics.immigration,ont.general,bc.general Subject: Re: We dont want any more immigrants!
