CANADA'S OWN GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY

by Doug Collins [July 1, 1996, North Shore News]

WE often flatter ourselves that government conspiracies common to the
American legal and political systems do not apply in the True North. That
may have been the case once. No longer.

We have only to look at the never ending actions against Ernst Zundel, who
of course is a fully registered villain - a "neo-Nazi" and admirer of
Hitler.

He may be. But that doesn't impress me. There is no lack of Stalin-lovers
and neo-Bolsheviks in this country, some of whom find government
employment, while others send bombs to people. But there is no big
campaign against them.

Zundel sends only word bombs. Hauled before the courts for years on
thought-crime charges, he has never finally been found guilty.

In short, he is not a criminal. But Ottawa wants to deport him.

Real criminals are often allowed to remain, however.

When Gerry Weiner was minister of immigration he let Abraham Finkel stay.
Finkel had been convicted of serious crimes in several countries, and two
previous ministers had denied him immigrant status. But he got to stay.

What is Zundel's offence? "Holocaust denial" and "anti-Zionism."

The Canadian Jewish Congress sees him as Public Enemy Number One and a
hate merchant. But he has never been in court on hate charges.

Only last March, Charles Harnick, the attorney general of Ontario (who is
Jewish) had to drop such charges against him for lack of evidence.

A new tack had to be tried and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service
(CSIS) obliged, claiming he was a danger to Canadian security, and he was
hauled before the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC).

It is a process in which all the dice are loaded against the target. The
hearings are held behind closed doors, no media are present, and there is
no cross-examination of witnesses.

It is a secret police action aimed in this case at getting Zundel out of
the country.

(He arrived in Canada in 1958 and has twice been denied citizenship even
though government sources have admitted that his applications were
"flawless.")

The first witness against him at the security hearing was Bernie Farber of
the Jewish Congress.

The official reason for claiming Zundel is a danger to security is that he
"may" have associated with members of the racist Heritage Front, which is
said to be violent, although as far as I have been able to determine its
violence has been confined to defending itself against attack by leftists.

But here's the trump. The chief organizer for the Heritage Front was Grant
Bristow, who turned out to be a government agent provocateur who had been
paid a lot of money by CSIS. They set something up, you see, and then they
tear it down.

One is reminded of Tsarist days in Russia and of the many members of the
U.S. Communist Party who were FBI men. Had it not been for them the party
might have collapsed.

Whatever the Heritage Front may be, there is no law preventing anyone from
associating with anyone else, unless they are conspiring to commit a
crime. Which has to be proved in court, not at some secret hearing.

The claim that Zundel is a danger to Canadian security is a joke.

In 1984 his house was bombed. In 1995 it was destroyed by an arsonist. In
the same year he got a parcel bomb that would have killed him if he had
opened it.

In 1988, at his second "false news" trial, he was attacked by three Jews
on the steps of the Toronto courthouse.

The incident was shown on TV and they were charged, but the court gave
them "the benefit of the doubt."

One wonders whether that verdict would have applied if Zundel's people had
been roughing up Jews on the courthouse steps.

His pursuers have now run into a snag.

Lawyer Doug Christie went to court recently to get a declaration that the
security hearings should not take place on account of CSIS being biased in
the case.

To the rage of many, the judge adjourned the case "sine die," meaning
indefinitely.

So CSIS cannot proceed, and Zundel will be around for a while yet.

                                       [End]

[FYI]
                    Action on Nazi suspects halted
                            ________________
                    Ruling upbraids Chief Justice

                    by Kirk Makin [Justice Reporter]

                       The Toronto Globe and Mail

                         [Friday, July 5, 1996]

p. 1/

Deportation cases against three men suspected of being Nazi war criminals
were abruptly halted yesterday in a ruling that affirmed the independence
of judges but dealt a staggering blow to Canadian attempts to prosecute
war criminals.

Mr. Justice Bud Cullen of the Federal Court of Canada said the Chief
Justice of his own court was "egregiously" wrong to discuss the cases in
private with assistant deputy attorney-general Ted Thompson.

"The public mind must be assured that anyone coming before this court will
be treated fairly and that the government or another powerful party will
not enjoy a special advantage," Judge Cullen said.

He acknowledged that the genocidal practices of the Nazis and their
collaborators were heinous and should not go unpunished. But on the other
hand, he said, the breach of judicial independence in the case was
unprecedented and could scarcely be clearer.

"The fact that these crimes are so serious snd carry with them such moral
[disapprobation] also demands that the judge who hears them is convinced
by the evidence alone, and NOT BY PRESSURE THAT WAS BROUGHT TO BEAR BY ANY
OUTSIDER [emphasis added, as it will continue to be to underscore telltale
commentaries throughout the transcription of this article]," Judge Cullen
said.

At the heart of the dispute was a meeting held on March 1 between Mr.
Thompson and Chief Justice Julius Issac during which they discussed the
timing of denaturalization cases against Helmut Oberlander, Johann Dueck
and Erich Tobiass.

Mr. Thompson warned that since the court seemed either "unable or
unwilling to proceed with the cases expeditiously," the government was
seriously considering going over its collective head to the Supreme Court
of Canada by way of a reference case.

Chief Justice Isaac reported back later the same day to Mr. Thompson that
he had spoken about the matter to the presiding judge, Associate Chief
Justice James Jerome. He said Judge Jerome FELT CHASTENED AND WOULD IN
FUTURE GIVE WAR-CRIMES PROSECUTIONS THE HIGHEST PRIORITY.

Meeting involving Chief Justice 'patently wrong'

p. 5/

In his ruling yesterday, Judge Cullen said any reasonable person would
read Judge Jerome's sudden enthusiasm for hurrying future cases--AN ACT
THAT MIGHT BE TO THEIR DETRIMENT--as being directly linked to Mr.
Thompson's visit.

Mr. Thompson and Chief Justice Isaac MUST SURELY HAVE BEEN AWARE that
their meeting and discussion "were PATENTLY WRONG," he noted.

Worse still, he said, the incident was not simply a case of a judge of
equal rank gratuitously expressing his opinion to a fellow judge. "Here,
THE INFORMATION CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE HEAD OF THIS COURT ON THE URGING OF
A SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL WHO ALSO ACTS FOR ONE OF THE PARTIES."

Juge Cullen said a reasonable person viewing the sequence of events would
further conclude that all other judges of the Federal Court would have
borne the same taint had the war-crimes cases been reassigned to them.

In arguing for a stay of proceedings, defence counsel Donald Bayne, Gesta
Abols and Robert McGee maintained that THE CLANDESTINE MEETING WAS A NAKED
ATTEMPT BY THE GOVERNMENT TO HAVE JUDGE JEROME REMOVED FROM THE CASE. They
said the Justice Department was furious over several technical rulings
that had gone against them.

"I don't want to speculate what this will do to the careers of the Chief
Justice or the assistant deputy attorney-general," Mr. Bayne said in an
interview yesterday. "That is an issue for others to decide. But I really
do believe this vindicates our system of justice."

A representative of the Justice Department said yesterday that the
department is studying the decision before deciding whether to appeal.

Representatives of the Jewish community were infuriated. They said the
delays inherent in the appeal process will ensure that Mr. Oberlander, Mr.
Dueck and Mr. Tobiass need have no further fear of losing their Canadian
citizenship.

"This could be the end of war-crimes prosecutions in this country," said
Irving Abella, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. "I'm offended
and I'm angry. People who ALLEGEDLY have the blood of thousands of people
on their hands will walk free and live off the fat of the land."

Mr. Abella said Canadians should picture the outrage they would have felt
had multiple killers Paul Bernardo or Clifford Olsen been freed SIMPLY
because a l lawyer asked a judge to speed their cases along.

However, Judge Cullen said: "It is not sufficient to that the respondents'
cases are of such importance to Canadian society that the transgressions
of the Chief Justice of the Federal Court and the assistant deputy
attorney-general should be overlooked.

In my view, the fact that the accusations against the respondents are so
serious demands a very high level of judicial independence."

He also said THERE IS NOTHING TO SUGGEST THAT JUDGE JEROME WAS, IN FACT,
MOVING UNUSUALLY SLOWLY OR NEGLIGENTLY on the cases. Still, the government
HAD THE OPTION of quietly pursuing a reference to the Supreme Court.

"To approach the Chief Justice of the Federal Court WITHOUT NOTICE TO THE
PARTIES OR TO ISSUE A VEILED THREAT of a reference to the Supreme Court is
not the solution," Judge Cullen said.

In the wake of the judgement, one of the chief questions outstanding is
WHETHER MR. THOMPSON ACTED ALONE OR AT THE BEHEST OF THE DEPUTY JUSTICE
MINISTER HIMSELF. While the incident was virtually ignored by the press
at the outset, the proceeding began to attract attention in its final
stages. In early June, Justice Minister Allan Rock reacted to the heat by
appointing former Ontario chief justice Charles Dubin to conduct an
inquiry. He has not yet reported his findings.

In addition, Mr. Thompson went on temporary leave and referred his actions
to the Law Society of Upper Canada for a ruling on whether it constituted
professional misconduct.

The Justice Department, which disclosed the meeting between Mr. Thompson
and Chief Justice Isaac to the defence a week after it happened, has
admitted that IT SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE.

The stay of proceedings in the three cases adds to A STUNNING RECORD OF
FAILURE IN DEALING WITH ACCUSED WAR CRIMINALS. Foiled in its attempts to
prosecute suspects, the government turned a couple of years ago to
denaturalization and deportation proceedings.

"They have been EXTREMELY POOR CASES," Mr. Bayne said yesterday. "There is
a legitimate interest in prosecuting war crimes, but these cases are AT A
POINT WHERE THE ENDS NO LONGER JUSTIFY THE MEANS."

                                   [End]

Montreal lawyer says Jewish leaders are trying to manipulate the community

by Bram D. Eisenthal

[JTA / May 3, 1995]

As far as Mountreal's Jewish community is concerned, Julius Grey's timing
and statements could not have been more outrageous.

Hundreds of community members called radio talk shows, rabbis, friends and
communal organizations last week in response to the renowned lawyer's
public comments that anti-Semitism and the Holocaust were being
manipulated by Jewish leaders in an effort to keep the community united.

"I think the Holocaust and anti-Semitism is being used by some elements in
Israel and the Jewish community to keep people in the fold," Grey said
April 24 to a group of 30 students at John Abbot College, located near
Montreal. His speech was part of a weeklong Holocaust symposium conducted
at the college.

"What is happening is a fake, alarmist mentality, because there is
effectively no anti-Semitism in North America," added the lawyer, an
expert on constitutional affairs who teaches law at Montreal's McGill
University.

Grey's comments came only days before Jewish communities around the globe
held observances to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day.

In his remarks, Grey was also critical of how the Holocaust is taught to
Jewish students. Holocaust studies sand, in particular, sending teen-agers
on tours of Nazi death camps has turned the Holocaust into an overhyped
political issue, Grey said.

"Each ethnic group creates its own martyrology -- that we're good and kind
and we've been mistreated. The fact is, if you look around Canada today,
you'll find a society with zero anti-Semitism," he said.

The fact that Grey is Jewish, born in Poland in 1948 and lost his
grandfather in the Holocaust upset community members even more.

"Does Grey know what really happened" in Europe, said child survivor
Sidney Zoltak, organizer of the Montreal Memorial Holocaust Center' s Yom
Hashoah program.

"Please excuse me if I get a little emotional," said Zoltak, who noted
that in his "hometown of 7,500 Jews, only 70 remained."

Zoltak said Grey's comments really touched a nerve with survivors because
it was only in the past decade that they have felt free to speak out.

Montreal has one of the highest concentrations of survivors in North America.

Montreal's Jewish organizations roundly condemned Grey.

A joint statement critical of his comments was issued by Canadian Jewish
Congress and the Montreal Memorial Holocaust Center.

Robert Libman, B'nai Birth Canada's Quebec region director, also slammed
Grey during a televised news interview.

The Montreal Memorial Holocaust Center's director of educational services,
Naomi Kramer, said Grey's views were mistaken.

"I don't think there's any conspiracy among Jewish leaders to expropriate
the Holocaust to ensure community support," she said.

Mike Cohen, national communications director at the Canadian Jewish
Congress, said that in the past, he never has received so many calls from
irate community members on one issue.

"They are quite angry, and naturally it's a unilateral condemnation of Mr.
Grey's sentiments," Cohen said.

One person called and said Grey should he protesting against Ottawa' s
lack of action against people such as Holocaust denier and Toronto- based
hate propaganda publisher Ernst Zundel, not aiding Zundel and his
followers, he added.

Cohen said he and CJC Quebec region director Jack Jedwab had been getting
early-morning calls at their residences as a result of the emotionally
charged issue.

Jedwab said Grey's comments could be exploited by Holocaust deniers,
which, he said, explained why the remarks could be so injurious to the
community.

Cohen said, "Imagine being a member of the community and waking up to this
as front-page news in your daily paper, coming from a prominent member of
your own community. It's a real shock to the system."

He was referring to an article that appeared in the Montreal daily
newspaper. The Gazette, which covered Grey's remarks under a headline that
read, "Holocaust Exploited By Jews, Grey Says."

Cohen pointed out that the issue would be dealt with at CJC's upcoming
national plenary May 14-15 in Montreal. At that time, a panel of eight
Holocaust experts will discuss related issues in a form moderated by
Toronto's Shirley Solomon, a television talk show host who is herself the
child of survivors and often deals with Holocaust and racial issues on her
show.

"We should invite Grey to appear," Cohen said sarcastically.

For Grey's part, he was unrepentant. He reiterated his views on three
radio programs.

"I stand by what I said," Grey said. "I don't think it was offensive. "

He felt that people had overreacted to the story in the Gazette.

"I think the headline sounded like Holocaust denial or diminishment.
People have been calling me a quisling and an anti-Semite on the radio."
he said.

THE FOUL ODOR OF NAC RACISM

by Trevor Lautens

[July 1/1996 - North Shore News]

Canada, you stink with hypocrisy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wrote that sentence on my little machine. Then I erased it. It goes way,
way too far. It was too loose. It was too unfair to too many. That spoiled
any legitimacy it might claim.

It might have passed muster if it had read: "Certain Canadians, largely
though not exclusively in Canada's ruling political, cultural, academic,
legal, media and union elites, and allowing that other though fewer
members of those same elites disagree with them, routinely raise the odor
of a double standard on significant and especially deeply symbolic public
issues."

But then it would have sounded like an editorial - the considered opinion
of an institution - not a column - the considered opinion of an
individual.

So I scrapped that opening sentence. The Canada and the Canadians I love
don't deserve it.

But listen up, you fork-tongued skunks who badly mislead my country: for
you, it's still there, and it's you I mean.

Consider the election of a new leader of the National Action Committee of
the Status of Women.

For starters, outgoing president Sunera Thobani, ethnically Indian (and a
dogmatist who repelled countless people with her clipped,
don't-argue-with-me pronunciamientos), grotesquely imitated Winston
Churchill's imperishably moving "we shall fight them on the beaches"
speech made during the darkest days of the Second World War.

But in Thobani's fatuous version, the enemy wasn't the bloody Nazi war
machine that confronted Churchill's Britain and would have destroyed a
thousand years of unfolding liberty; it was those awful "conservatives"
who push papers around, advocate personal responsibility, maybe even
attend church, and meekly try to spend no more of Canada's public money
than it takes in.

That's a "radical" idea only for the generation of pompous leftists like
Thobani who have lived exclusively in an atmosphere where ruinous public
debt is the norm, and have soft jobs demanding more of it while cosily
curled up on the hard-working Canadian's hide - since NAC naturally
expects subsidies from precisely the kind of "conservative" (i.e., solvent
and tax-paying) people it hates. The Marxist clones and clowns have always
insolently expected capitalism to pay for its own funeral, and our liberal
governments have cravenly obliged them.

That Thobani could equate Hitler's Wehrmacht with Mike Harris'
"common-sense revolution" and such should have had her audience rolling in
the aisles. But the New Stuffy Class has no sense of humor, or of history.

But now to serious matters. The NAC presidential election was by all
reports the most openly, baldly, pus-leeching racist event of any
consequence in this country in years. Race, race, race was virtually the
whole issue; what little remained was class. Race all but monopolized the
politicking.

Thobani - now en route to a new job at UBC - flatly asserted that only a
"woman of color" should lead NAC.

And so it came to pass: her successor, a black Jamaican native, easily
beat her white "middle-class" rival, ridiculed by some delegates because
of her involvement with that well-known bunch of lackeys of the white
bourgeoisie, the - wait for it! - Girl Guides!

Of course, the aforementioned Canadian elites instantly denounced these
racists. MPs elbowed each other aside in haste to castigate them. The
media bayed. There were hints of prosecution.

Like fun there were.

The Canadian establishment, 1990s style, gets in a great froth about the
spectre of racism taking over the country only if 16 pale men with
straw-colored hair gather in a barn in Alberta and make Hitler salutes to
each other.

Where the hell is Max Yalden, for years our national human rights czar and
always good for a purse-lipped quote about how Canadians are failing his
tolerance test, when a whole convention-full of radical leftists make
openly racist statements?

Where are the other institutional offense-checkers?

Easily answered. By and large - with the qualifications up there near the
top of this piece - these elites are fixated only on small, selective,
readily scapegoated targets, the selection based on what offends their own
leftist and progressive prejudices.

There isn't a (white?) ghost of a chance that open appeals to race in a
mass organization like NAC will get more than a cursory glance from the
correctness police.

I've run out of space.

I had more examples. They'll keep. But this one is a real stinker.

                         ---------begin---------

The following was written by Susan Riggs, a Canadian citizen living in
Ontario. She wrote this for the Detroit Free Press (1994). Posted without
permission from anybody, the sole purpose being the free exchange of
ideas.

             =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

An open letter to my American neighbors:

Like you, I woke up today, got dressed and settled down to a steaming brew
and the morning newspaper before heading out to work. Unlike you, I read
that dozens of my fellow citizens were arrested for carrying copies of the
Buffalo News. The newspaper contained information about a trial here that
the powers-that-be did not want us to read. It is that simple.

It is now 11:15 p.m. Minutes ago, I turned on the Buffalo television
station, hoping to see on my TV what could not reach us through the
newspapers. I am now looking at a blank screen. We received about 10
seconds of the trial controversy, and suddenly my screen went blank. A
message appeared on the screen explaining that because of the
contravention of a ban, the station was prohibiting broadcast of the news.
Along with the sign was a high-pitched whistle that sounded like the
air-raid sirens the Britons used during World War II.

As I sit here alone, I realize that my blood is running cold at the sound
of that whistle.

This could never happen here.

Not in Canada.

You must wonder about a country that would deny its own citizens the
freedom to read. As a Canadian, I have done a lot of hard thinking about
it. I guess the powers have their reasons for the ban. Censorship always
has its reasons, but, believe me, when you are on the receiving end of
government censorship, no reason amounts to a hill of beans - and that is
why I am writing to you.

It is my hope that you will read the Canadian story and, as your famous
columnist Ann Landers says, "wake up and smell the coffee" - while you
still have a newspaper to read along with it.

I have always loved the United States of America, and I know that you are
now making critical decisions about the role of government in your lives.
Many years ago, we in Canada were at a crossroads in our decision-making
that is similar to the one you are at now. I wish our decisions back then
had been very different. Then maybe I wouldn't be sitting here looking at
a blank screen.

Some two decades ago, Canadians were concerned with how government could
best help its citizens. We looked around at countries with a comprehensive
social welfare system and envied them their cushions of comfort for
everything from universal medical care to national day care.

We were a country that held individual freedom in high esteem. Surely, we
thought, it was possible to take the best aspects of socialism and weave
them into the fabric of a free society. After all, this was democratic
Canada and not the Soviet Union.

Over the next 20 years, we developed an extensive social support network
at both the federal and provincial levels of government. The government
spent money on every conceivable program. We spent and spent. Still, no
one was ever really satisfied.

The spending even now continues unabated, and our national deficit today
stands at more than $45 billion. (We are now looking to New Zealand for
pointers on how to control our deficit.)

When you adopt an extensive government agenda, you soon discover that all
the entrenched programs and layers of bureaucracy become impossible to
budge. Much of the population works for the government; about one of every
four Canadians now draws a government paycheck.

People learn to depend on government, and all governments, even those
whose leaders warn against this dependency, learn to love the power that
flows from it.

As for the threat to individual liberty, newspaper censorship is, frankly,
the tip of the iceberg. Government intervenes in our lives constantly, and
individual liberties are abrogated in new and ever more imaginative ways
each day.

Recently, while on vacation, I rented a car in Seattle and tried to drive
into British Columbia. My car was confiscated at the border. When I asked
for an explanation, I was told that I had not paid taxes on it - a rental
car. Had I been an American, there would have been no problem, but as a
Canadian, I had to pay $200 more for a Canadian rental car in order to
continue my trip.

Canadians who dare to get a haircut or a car tune-up across the border are
being photographed and prosecuted upon their return to Canada. Why?
Because they have secured these services without having to incur the 7
percent goods and services tax slapped onto our ever-burgeoning provincial
taxes. Even insurance plans are now taxed.

A black market has sprung up, mainly in liquor and cigarettes, which carry
the heaviest taxes. Don't think that the taxes will end there, though.

Once it takes hold, monopolization by government soon spreads to nearly
every aspect of your life; in the Toronto area alone, we have six separate
municipal governments and one super-municipal government (the "mother" of
all local governments) called Metro, which exists to oversee the others.

You will find that after a time, your state and federal governments - even
those of a different political stripe - will join forces to make their
task of tax collection easier.

Our entire education system, up to university level, is governed by a
centralized bureaucracy called the Ministry of Education, which dictates
what can and cannot be taught in the schools and how it is to be taught.
Universities are mainly government-funded.

I realize that the issue of government-run programs is particularly
important to you now because of the state of your health-care system. I
sympathize with you completely. I cannot imagine a world where one could
be left bankrupt because of illness. I also think that you are on the
right track with your solutions. If anyone can devise a workable system
for medical care, it is you.

I suggest that you look upon it as you do your police protection: a guard
in place for the physical and mental well-being of your citizens. The real
danger in socialized medicine is the attitude of entitlement it engenders.

The stories you have heard about us are largely true. It is not uncommon
to pick up a newspaper and read about "The frightening wait for cancer
therapy" here in Ontario, and the situation is no better in the other
provinces. There is a shortage of the most advanced diagnostic technology.
Thousands of the health cards that ensure access to medical care have been
issued erroneously.

We do wait two hours for an appointment booked weeks in advance. Despite
our world-class doctors, many patients can't get treatment in time because
of overcrowding. When you are faced with a life-and-death medical
situation, you don't mind paying whatever it costs. Under the government-
dominated medical system, however, you can't even buy your way in -
unless, of course, you go to the United States.

The sound of the air-raid siren on my TV has stopped, at least for now. As
the politicians love to say, this is my "defining moment."

Writing is my great love, the part of me that can never be censored. This
letter was difficult to write, and no one up here knows that I have
written it. All these issues are not just personal; they are professional,
too.

I am employed in administration at a prominent Ontario university that has
historically enjoyed a high degree of autonomy. Last summer, my president
wrote a letter to the staff explaining that the government had expressed
an intention to take a more active role in the management of university
affairs. He described this as an enormous threat to our autonomy as a
free-thinking institution, and in the end the government retreated - for
now.

As I sit here tonight, it is simply beyond my comprehension that such a
well-intentioned and beloved country as my own could go so far astray so
quickly. And it is all the more remarkable that it has taken place without
grand conspiracies or intricate plots.

Indeed, most Canadians are as offended by the images of totalitarian
government as you are. We shared your joy at the fall of the Berlin Wall
and the crumbling of the Soviet bloc; we value freedom. And yet we have
fallen into a trap where we are not free.

As with that other well-known road, we traveled this one with the best of
intentions.

To those who would dismiss me as an alarmist, I issue this invitation:
Read our newspapers, watch our news broadcasts (what is left of them) and
see for yourselves. Prove me wrong. I wish you could.

When you make critical decisions about the role of government in your
life, please think about me, about this letter and about Canada.

Really think about what it could mean when you hear about a government
initiative that sounds too good to be true. Thank God for a free press,
even when you find yourself criticizing the media for broadcasting stories
that you would rather not hear about. The recent publication ban is not
the first one. There are others, and their number is growing.

Listen and learn, America. Cup your ear to the wind and hear the
blood-chilling wail of the siren whistle as it drifts down across your
border.

If just one of you reads this letter and pauses, even for a moment, to
think about what unchecked government can do, then it has been worth the
writing.

I have faith in you, America. Your road is tough and not perfect. Nothing
is. Your road will keep leading you to freedom - the freedom to read and
think and be exactly who and what you are - if you only let it. Treasure
that freedom, love it and resolve never, ever to let it go.

                                  [END]

                                   [End]

[FYI]

                                   [End]

The CODOH site shut down without warning; the Freedom site shut down
without warning. The [still-named] Simon Wiesenthal Center's second-string
Rabbi Cooper hectoring the Australian authorities to pull the plug on the
Adelaide Institute's Website Down Under. Coincidence? Synchronicity?

Hardly...

I suspected for some time that Daniel Keren didn't like Nazis or even
neo-Nazis, but it's gratifying to see he doesn't much like wannabe
censors, either. The nadir of censorship of course being that wannabe
"'revisionist' neo-Nazi" censor named Ernst Zundel. (Ouff! What a
Dante-esque image!...)

What Daniel Keren needs to do now is to sit down and have a quite word
with the SWC's Rabbi Cooper and sell the censorship-happy cleric on the
merit of a free and open debate in the marketplace of ideas.

It shouldn't be that hard. For starters, Rabbi Cooper isn't anywhere as
"respulsive" as Bradley Smith. On the contrary.

Moreover, if Keren can talk to straight to revisionists (excuse me,
"deniers"), then he should be able to give the rabbi some straight talk
about the downside of censorship, legal arm-twisting, and what-not. It
looks bad; it gives others an impression of profound insecurity, of
whining immaturity. And so on.

In fact, it should be an easy sell. All Keren would have to do is remind
Rabbi Cooper that by beating the drum for censorship he'd find himself in
lock-step with Ernst Zundel. I'm sure thast would be the last thing the
rabbi would want. Anything but that.

                                   [End]

Jews trace cyberspace 'hatred' to Australia

by Rodney Chester and Rory Callinan

The Federal Government is investigating two controversial Australian-based
anti-semitic Internet sites after an alert from international Nazihunters,
the Simon Wiesenthal Centre.

The centre, renowned for its dogged pursuit of hundreds of Nazi war
criminals, detected the controversial sites as it followed the trail of
far-right groups into cyberspace.

After locating the sites earlier this year, the centre wrote to the
Australian Embassy in Washington calling on the Attorney-General to
investigate if the sites breached any local laws.

The sites, one calling itself Adelaide Institute says: "We are a group of
individuals who are looking at the Jewish-Nazi holocaust.

"We are worried about the fact that to date it has been impossible to
reconstruct a homicidal gas chamber."

Al Moharer Al-Australi says it "wants to challenge all forms of New World
Order conditioning and thought control".

Wiesenthal Centre associate dean Abraham Cooper, speaking from its Los
Angeles headquarters, said many "hate" groups around the world had taken
to the Net in the past 18 months to reach a potential audience of 40
million.

Rabbi Cooper said there were about 100 Web sites around the world
promoting "hatred and mayhem".

"It is an unprecedented but powerful tool that not only can be used for
good but also be used for evil," he said.

"Our experience has been that the authorities don't even understand the
technology that well."

Rabbi Cooper said there had been numerous cases in the United States where
"very bright" students had down-loaded bomb-making recipes off the net.

One science teacher in Miami "was about one second away from blowing up
both himself and his school", he said.

The centre, which uses the Web to promote its own cause, has set up a
cuberwatch programme "not because we are opposed to computers but because
we're committed to human rights."

Adelaide Institute director Fredrick Toben said last night: "We would
welcome any investigation.
"But we would also like them to investigate Rabbi Cooper and the tradition
that he comes from, namely from the Babylonian Talmud which is the ethical
base that he operates on.
"It is used by certain members of the Jewish community as a guide and the
Babylonian Talmud is full of filth and hatred so let him (the Rabbi) cast
the first stone."

A spokesman for federal Attorney-General Darrel Williams confirmed the
office had received the letter and claims were being investigated.

Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies president Laurie Rosenblum said he
regularly received complaints from Queenslanders about material on the
Internet.

He said there was urgent need to censor the Net.

"The problem is that you have got this technology where some extremist
organisation can print out stuff and transpose it and then hand it out or
publish it in a newsletter," he said

The Australian Broadcasting Authority is expected to release its
guidelines on control of the Internet today.

People have been calling me a quisling and an anti-Semite on the radio."
he said.

Hitler's Ghost

by Christopher Hitchens

[June 1996, Vanity Fair, pp. 72, 74]

Cherry blossoms are bursting over the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson
Memorial as I ascend the steps of the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum. There is to be a learned seminar today, on the newest
interpretation of the Final Solution. Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, a
36-year-old assistant professor at Harvard, is to defend his thesis in
*Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust*, a
book which has been a spring sensation.

Having immersed myself in thos volume for a weekend, I am eager to ask one
big question that cries to heaven for an answer. It is this: *Who on earth
does Goldhagen think he is arguing with?* He comes to tell us there was a
good deal of state- and church-sponsored anti-Semitism in German culture.
He adds that the Nazis made great use of Jew hatred in their propaganda.
He goes on to say that many Germans took part in beatings, killings, and
roundups not because they were coerced but because they liked the idea. He
announces that not many Germans resisted the persecution of their Jewish
countrymen.

Excuse me, but I knew this and so did you. Moreover, the sarcastic phrase
about "obeying orders" is not even a well-known explanation, only a
well-known *excuse*. All the way through Goldhagen's presentation, which
is one tautology piled on another, I wait to make my point. And then the
two big scholars present come to the podium with their comments, and I
realize I have been wasting my time.

Sophomoric, meretricious, unoriginal, unhistorical, a product of media
hype by Knopf (the book's publisher), contradictory, repetitive,
callow...I'm just giving you the gist of what they said about *Hitler's
Willing Executioners*. It must have been quite an ordeal for Goldhagen,
who looks about 12, to sit through this kind of thing from revered
seniors. Professor Yehuda Bauer of Hebrew University, for example, is
effectively the academic founder of the Yad Vashem Holocaust archives in
Jerusalem and the author of at least three of the dozen or so standard
works on the subject. Professor Konrad Kwiet is no lightweight, either. He
is the scholar-in-residence at the Research Instituite at the Holocaust
Museum and the adviser to the government of Australia on war crimes.

I watch Goldhagen being ground between these heavy millstones and two
things happen to me. First, I feel a rush of sympathy for the kid.
*Sixty-three* percent of German electors voted against Hitler in the last
free election in Weimar, says Bauer witheringly, and there were vicious
Jew-baiters in Germany in the early 19th century. So how come, Mr. Clever
Young Historian, that one time it ends in blood and another time not? If
you don't know, you shouldn't talk. This big-time book of yours should
have remained a doctoral thesis and maybe those supervisors at Harvard
could try harder. (I'm paraphrasing the scholars only slightly.)

The second thing that happens is that I feel a new respect for the
Research Institute at the Holocaust museum. It can't have been easy, this
trashing of an attractive and earnest young man. How was he to know that
there is more to the Holocaust than meditations on cruelty and the German
character, or that he was supposed to have a deep theoretical knowledge of
Fascism? Doesn't almost every Hollywood and pulp outlet make the Final
Solution seem like a sort of morality tale? Did not *The New Republic's*
Leon Wieseltier--whose remarks closed this seminar--once observe mordantly
that "there's no business like Shoah business"? So, good for the
institute.

There is, of course, another answer to the question I never asked.
Goldhagen *is* involved in an argument with an unseen opponent, and so are
all the other experts on the platform, including Christopher Browning,
whose book *Ordinary Men* anticipated Goldhagen by four years. This unseen
opponent is David Irving, a British historian with depraved ideas about
the whole narrative.

Irving *does* have a rounded and developed theory of Fascism, which is to
say that he has studied it a lot and it's had a bum rap. He's even been
quoted as calling himself a "mild Fascist" or "a moderate
Fascist"--oxymoronic if true. In the week that I went to the
Holocaust-museum seminar, Irving was hastily dumped by St. Martin's Press,
which had undertaken to produce his book on the papers of Hitler's
minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, the choreographer for the
Nuremberg style, and had then, at the very threshold of publication, taken
fright. Book canceled, author disowned, tearful statements from the top
brass about how if only they had known...

Encountering Tom Dunne of St. Martin's that very week, I told him I was
going to criticize him in print, and he replied, "If you want a title for
the article, call it 'Profiles in Prudence.'" A good joke from a good man.
But at whose expense?

I have thought about this a lot and I feel the need to say, very clearly,
that St. Martin's has disgraced the business of publishing and degraded
the practice of debate. David Irving is not just a Fascist historian. He
is also a great historian of Fascism. But you would never have known this
>from the way that the controversy was written up.

HITLER'S SPIN ARTIST was the headline on a typical column, by Frank Rich
in the *New York Times*, raising the alarm about the mere idea of Irving's
being published. *The Washington Post* was not laggard, saying that Irving
"routinely refers to the Holocaust as a hoax." Jonathan Yardley , a
cultural critic of some standing, wrote a whole article that positively
sighed with satisfaction at the idea that, having neither read nor seen
the book, he could now safely counsel others to do likewise. Nary a voice
was raised, in American publishing or academe or journalism, to ask if
David Irving had anything to contribute as a chronicler.

Things were rather different in my country of birth, which doesn't even
*have* a First Amendment. More than 120 book sections of English magazines
and newspapers have requested copies from Irving's British publisher, and
reviews are pouring in. I might mention Robert Harris, author of
*Fatherland* and *Enigma*, who wrote in the London *Evening Standard* on
April 1 that "in the words of the military writer John Keegan: 'No
historian of the Second World War can afford to ignore Irving.' Few
contemporary scholars have his depth of knowledge, virtually none has met
as many of its leading figures and nobody, surely, has unearth more
original material--a private archive known as the 'Irving Collection,'
always generously made available to other researchers, which weighs more
than half a ton."

Harris could have added that his own brilliant book *Selling
Hitler*--describing the 1983 forgery of "the Hitler Diaries," which
hoodwinked a large chunk of the British establishment (including
historians of the caliber of Hugh Trevor-Roper, author of *The Last Days
of Hitler*)--was made possible in part by Irving's finding that those
nasty papers were indeed a fake. Irving rendered another service by
unmasking some spurious documents connecting Churchill and Mussolini. He
speaks faultless German. He has, in the most recent case, been the first
historian to see some 75,000 pages of diary entries by Joseph Goebbels,
held in secrecy in Moscow from 1945 to 1992. His studies of the
Churchill-Roosevelt relationship, of the bombing of Dresden, of the
campaigns of Rommel and others, are such that you can't say you know the
subject *at all* unless you have read them. And, incidentally, he has
never and not once described the Holocaust as a "hoax."

I have caught David Irving out, just by my own researches, in one grossly
anti-Jewish statement and one wildly paranoid hypothesis and several
flagrant contradictions. But I learned a lot in the process of doing so.
It's unimportant to me that Irving is my political polar opposite. If I
didn't read my polar opposites, I'd be even stupider than I am. But what
did I get when I went round that Holocaust seminar? Professors Bauer and
Kwiet and Browning, asked if they agreed with the St. Martin's decision,
shrank as if I had invited them to a Witches' Sabbath. None of them would
say that Irving should never be published, but all of them said that if it
were up to them he would not be.

Deborah Lipstadt, author of the standard text *Denying the Holocaust*,
told *The New York Times* that one wouldn't and shouldn't publish David
Duke on race relations, and (varying her pitch a bit) told *The Washington
Post* that one wouldn't and shouldn't publish Jeffrey Dahmer on man-boy
love. What is this vertiginous nonsense? These are supposedly experienced
historians who claim to have looked mass death in the face, without
flinching. And they can't take the idea of a debate with David Irving?
Quite apart from the fact that many publishers would have rushed to
promote a Jeffrey Dahmer manuscript, what are we afraid of here?

I have now read the exchange of correspondence between Irving and St.
Martin's. For a long time, everything was hunky-dory. The manuscript was
read seven times in 15 months (and understandably, since it contained
amazing new material). The Military Book Club chose it as a main
selection. Sales representatives made ethusiastic noises. And then, after
a few hysterical and old-maidish articles in the press (*Eek--a Nazi!*),
Irving is told that his contract is void. He is told this not by the
publishers but by members of the press telephoning him for his reaction.

I remember when my friend Aryeh Neier, of the American Civil Liberties
Union (whose parents got out of Berlin just in time), made the decision to
uphold the right of the American Nazi Party to mount a demonstration in
Illinois in 1978. The A.C.L.U. lost a lot of donors and subscribers that
time. In a fine book entitled *Defending My Enemy*, Neier explained
soothingly that the law on free expression covers everybody, and thus that
in defending it for anybody you defend it for everybody.

After weeks of general acquiescence on the Irving suppression, Steve
Wasserman of Times Books was moved to push Neier's point with his
colleagues at Random House. In a contentious meeting, it was agreed they
would *actually* read the book. Someone will no doubt pick up where St.
Martin's left off; until then, one will have to seek David Irving on some
ghastly Brownshirt Web site, which will parade its bravery in making the
occult facts into revealed truth. Is this what the established experts
want?

A little depressed at this last thought, I made a late-night call to
Professor Raul Hilberg at the University of Vermont. Professor Hilberg's
book *The Destruction of the European Jews* was the original text on the
Holocaust, published in 1961. He is acknowledged as an ancestor on the
matter. He sighed a bit when I mentioned Irving, whom he regards as a
slipery customer but with whom he has had correspondence about documents
and details. A very good man in footnotes and archives, allowed Hilberg,
but you had to suspect his motives. However: "If these people want to
speak, let them. It only leads those of us who do research to re-examine
what we might have considered as obvious. And that's useful for us. I have
quoted Eichmann references that come from a neo-Nazi publishing house. I
am not for taboos and I am not for repression."

Currently, though, there *is* a taboo. And who really believes that if it
were lifted any honest person would be the loser?

                                       [End]

MILKING THE NEW RACISM RACKET

by Doug Collins [July 7, North Shore News]

GOVERNMENTS at all levels are easy touches as far as giving our money away
to minority and other pressure groups is concerned.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Such beggars have only to whisper that they are fighting "racism" and they
go away dancing on dollars.

Alan Dutton of the so-called Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research
Associations (CARES) is an expert at it. A couple of years ago, over in
Victoria, he spoke on behalf of the Race Relations Committee getting a
grant from the Capital Regional District to fight the "growing Nazi
menace" there.

I joked that Adolf Hitler must be hiding in Oak Bay. No "Nazis" were ever
identified or even seen.

Whether Dutton is otherwise gainfully employed I don't know. But last year
the NDP handed over about $135,000 to him so that he could pursue his
noble trade. You can be sure he gets money from the feds, too.

He used to be head of the B.C. Organization Against Racism, another
leftist lot. The media would always run to him for comment when the evil
"racists" raised their heads.

Then he had the bright idea of promoting himself to be executive secretary
of CARES, which sounds even better. So the media run to him even more.

In Toronto, meanwhile, something called the Anti-Racist Action (ARA)
appealed recently to the Metropolitan Council for $18,000, it being ARA's
plan to hold a two day "anti-Fascist, anti-racist, organizing conference."
In some secret location, in case Hitler heard about it, no doubt.

Dutton's crew was listed as the financial trustee for the event, and
according to the pre-conference blurb the great man was to be flown down
for it.

The ARA can best be described as a neo-Bolshevik group that is by no means
averse to violence. Columnist Christie Blatchford has stated in the
Toronto Sun that it is a "street-level anti-Nazi group whose tactics
historically have been as violent and ugly as those of its targets."

The "targets," are, I think, the Heritage Front. But I have found no
evidence of the Heritage Front or any other right-wing group in Toronto
having starting a rampage. It has defended itself against physical attack.
But the ARA has used violence more than once.

Blatchford stated: "ARA became most infamous for its June 1993 trashing of
a Heritage Front leader's house in which a crowd of about 300 smashed
windows and doors, and threw eggs, paint bombs and rocks.

"In 1944, its radio station CIUT, was briefly yanked from the air after
complaints that the hosts were calling for 'direct action' against
racists. Later that year, a group of ARA activists shut down a store they
claimed was linked to white supremacists."

I pause here to gape at the news that a Bolshevik bunch like this can
actually get a broadcasting licence from the CRTC. Would any right-wing
organization be able to get one? Not bloody likely!

Bill Dunphy, another Toronto Sun columnist, says ARA is "fascistic,
preaches hate, and is intolerant of any views but its own."

Just like Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, its soul mates.

You needn't be a "Nazi" to attract the venom of the ARA. All you need to
do is to put out a newsletter on foreign aid, freedom of speech and
immigration. Or hold peaceful discussion on those themes, all of which is
what Paul Fromm of Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform does.

Last December about two dozen ARA members broke into a private dinner
meeting he had organized in a restaurant in downtown Toronto.

Fromm reported that they assaulted an old lady, spat on the owner and
other people and tossed cream on a table of books.

Then they boasted on their website about having ruined the meeting.

So much for the "democratic" connections of CARES, which also has friends
in the B.C. Human Rights Council and in the NDP government. How else would
Dutton get money from it?

Fromm was here to hold a meeting a few weeks ago. And who should be
outside, filming people going in and taking their car numbers, but Dutton.

When the police state comes into full bloom, he will need such details.

They go with the territory.

B'nai B'rith Canada: With Malice Aforethought

While running for election to the Canadian Parliament as a Conservative
Party candidate in 1984, Winnipeg schoolteacher Luba Fedorkiw, to her
utter amazement discovered that B'nai B'rith Canada, a major Jewish
"anti-defamation" organization, had circulated an internal memo which
accused her of "Jew-baiting."

This allegation was repeated in the Winnipeg Sun, and the resulting
defamation cost her the election. Luba Fedorkiw sued B'nai B'rith Canada
for libel, with the result that she wsas eventually awarded $175,000 in
actual damages and $225,000 in punitive damages against the organization.

The jury found that the charges of anti-Semitism were unfounded and malicious.

ADL defames itself by honoring Hefner

by William F. Buckley Jr.

[The St. Louis Globe-Democrat - September 19 1980]

It is axiomatic that the village underworlder will seek the approval of
the same community he systematically despoils by ostentatious public
benefactions. Joe Bananas supporting the local church. Billy Sol Estes
hosting a boy scout picnic. Louis B. Mayer contributing to an institution
of higher learning.

No one has practiced the art of civic diversion more prodigiously than
Hugh Hefner, the founder of "Playboy" magazine and godfather of the sexual
revolution. His formula was as straightforward as the advertisements in
"Playboy" for sexually stimulating paraphernalia: make a lot of money by
pandering to the sexual appetite, elevating it to primacy - then spend
part of that money co-seducing critics or potential critics.

It was years ago that Harvard theologian Harvey Cox wrote an essay on
"Playboy," denominating it the single most brazen assault on the female as
a person in general circulation. What seemed like moments later, the same
scholar found himself writing earnest essays for "Playboy"; and before
long he forgot all about his mission to identify "Playboy" for what it
essentially is: an organ that seeks to justify the superordination of sex
over all other considerations - loyalty to family, any principle of
self-discipline, any respect for privacy, or for chastity or modesty. Sex
omnia vincit, Hugh Hefner's magazine told us, issue after issue.

Really, I wonder if anyone in the future can ever again take seriously the
Anti-Defamation League. Here is an organization "dedicated to the
combating prejudice and discrimination against Jews and other minorities,
and to the protection and extension of our democratic system for the
benefit of all Americans." "The League" the brochure continues, "works
with the various institutions of our society, public and private,
religious and secular, to achieve these ends." And it is celebrating later
this month its First Amendment Freedoms Awards by giving a dinner-dance in
honor of - Hugh M. Hefner.

About the honoree the ADL says, with an apparently straight face, that he
"began with little more than a unique idea for a magazine" (nude women,
jokes about copulation, and advice on how to seduce young girls) "and a
philosophy of social change." (The "philosophy," quite simply, that the
gratification of the male sexual impulse is to be achieved without any
second thought to the possible effect on a) the girl b) her family c) your
family d) any code of self-restraint.) "The empire he founded has had a
far-reaching impact, not only on the publishing industry, but on the mores
of American society as well." That is correct. Any serious disciple of
Hugh Hefner would not hesitate to purr anti-Semitic lovelies into the ears
of his bunny, if that was what was required to effect seduction.

The Anti-Defamation League has, in the past, surrendered to temptations
alien to its splendidly commendable purpose, namely to focus attention on,
and bring obloquy to, acts of racial discrimination. It meddled actively
in the presidential campaign of 1964, endeavoring to scare its clientele
into believing that Senator Goldwater was an ogre of sorts, backed by
fanatics and cravists. Its current director, Mr. Nathan Perlmutter, is a
man of high sensibility, gentle, firm, discriminating, a scholarly man
long associated with Brandeis University. One notes that he is charging
$250 a plate to guests who seek the privilege of joining with him to honor
Hugh Hefner.

The tawdriness of the symbolism is driven home. Even as Hugh Hefner sells
pictures of parted pudenda in order to make a dollar, a nickel of which he
donates to institutions devoted to the rights of Nazis to march in Skokie,
and of fellow pornographers to hawk their wares, the ADL raises money to
combat discrimination by honoring the principal agent of the kind of
selflessness that deprives racial toleration of the ultimate sanction.
This sanction rests on a profound belief in the sanctity of the
individual, yes, even that of the nubile girl. Take away from the struggle
for racial toleration the profound spiritual commitment to the idea of a
higher law, and the code against anti-Semitism becomes a mere matter of
social convenience, the kind of upward mobile patter one is taught in the
pages of "Playboy" to imitate, on the order of wearing Dior handkerchiefs
or Gucci loafers.

Racial toleration draws its principal strength from the proposition that
we are all brothers, created equal by God. The Playboy philosophy measures
human worth by bustline and genital energy. The affair will be celebrated,
appropriately enough, in Hollywood, at the Century Plaze Hotel. The
invitation specifies "black tie." Well, if the guests arrive wearing only
a black tie, that will be more than some of the guests wear at Hef's other
parties.

You didn't make, as you claim, a "typographical" error.

A typographical error is one made by confusing letters or a design in the
process of arranging the copy of a text.

What you did was first refer to "Bradley" and then to somebody called
"Brian." You confused two different names.

Not the same as a typographical error.

DER SPIEGEL
[31/1993]

                                       HOLOCAUST
                                  ___________________

Mörderische Augen

Als historisches Lehrstück war
der Prozeß gegen den SS-Mann
Demjanjuk geplant.

Rache befand Chaim Cohen, 82, früher selbst Richter an israels Oberstem

Knesset-Abgeordnete Schewach Wiess) in Szene gesetzt.

In seinem

As a companion-piece to this comprehensive article on the Soviet cover-up
of the Katyn Forest murders of thousands of Polish officers, I include
this short letter which appeared in the May 25, 1987 issue of the Canadian
edition of TIME magazine.

The letter was signed "Alexei Perevoshchikov, Novosti Press Angency, Moscow."

Quote:

Endquote.

A couple things stand out here.

First, notice how the Jewish organization B'nai B'rith is cast in the role
of validating the truthfulness of Soviet evidence. Mr. Perevoshchikov
refers to a specific B'nai B'rith report to underscore his point
concerning the absolute reliability of Soviet-supplied evidence; something
we all now know was untrue.

Second, notice also his stern indignation over Nazi war crimes. This from
the representative of a ruthless regime that had produced the equivalent
of 20,000 Katyns during its seven and a half decades in power.

==============================================================================

Bernie Farber and the Canadian Jewish Congress are no strangers to
government censorship. While Bernie Farber may feel there exist other
options that "would be far preferrable to government censorship," it
doesn't mean that he's in any way opposed to government censorship. In
fact, the Canadian Jewish Congress, Farber's employer, has sometimes turned
to government censorship to try and suppress the free speech and religious
freedom of other denominations.

*In 1993, millions of Canadian households (mine included) received a free
copy of a special 8-page supplement of a newspaper published by a Catholic
mission calling itself the Pilgrims of Saint Michael. Their publication
the "Michael" Journal routinely carried articles addressing economic
problems and stressing solutions based on the Social Credit philosophy.

The special supplement contained articles on Canada's federal income tax
system, the global influence of international banking syndicates, the
perils of a new international system of credit requiring that each person
be numbered, warnings concerning the dangers of debit cards, solutions to
the debt load, and a list of book titles for suggested reading. Important
to note: it did not contain any reference to Jews.

Nevertheless, the following year, The Toronto Globe and Mail reported the
CJC had filed a complaint with Canada Post concerning the newspaper
("Mailed 'hate-sheet' riles Dingwall," Feb. 15, 1994), claiming that while
the word Jew was never used, the newspaper was full of "veiled"
anti-Semitic commentary.

At the behest of the CJC, Public Works Minister, David Dingwall, wrote the
head of Canada Post demanding CP stop delivering any current or future
issues of the "Michael" Journal. "[A] disgusting ... hate sheet"
containing "vile and disgusting expressions of hatred towards the Jewish
people," reported Dingwall; he then demanded the CP president "immediately
instruct your employees to cease delivery of any editions of this hate
sheet."

In a subsequent editorial "Michael" Journal editor Alain Pilote answered
the charge: "[T]he "Michael" Journal never mentions the Jews, nor promotes
hatred against any race. We work to unite the population to fight and
correct the money system, since people of every race, including the Jews,
are victims of the present financial system." Adding: We have many Jewish
subscribers and friends who appreciate our work."

The dénouement to this story is the CJC complaint went nowhere. The reason
it went nowhere was because the The Pilgrims, contrary to what the CJC
alleged, were not purveying "anti-Semitic commentary," "veiled" or
otherwise. Pressed on all sides by irate letters addressed to him by his
Nova Scotian constituents, Minister Dingwall wrote and apologized to the
Pilgrims of Saint Michael for his unfair comments.

*In April, 1994, the Canadian Jewish Congress wrote Sergio Marchi,
Minister of Citzenship and Immigration, demanding that Khalid Abdul
Muhhamad - a senior aide to Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of
Islam - be barred from entering Canada. Muhhamad had been invited to
address a Black youth group at the University of Toronto; some 500 tickets
had already been sold to the event.

In response to the CJC letter and based on his criminal record and because
officials had "reason to believe he would engage in criminal activities"
by inciting hatred against an identifiable group, contrary to the Criminal
Code, the Immigration Department barred Muhammad from entering the
country. Soon after the University of Toronto cancelled the booking for
Muhammad's speech, citing the university's policy to ban events deemed
"unlawful."

In the end, Muhammad addressed a crowd of some 300 supporters at an
off-campus location through the medium of a telephone hooked up to a PA
system. Writing in the venerable Toronto Star ("Shooting the messenger:
Barring black Muslim obscures group's appeal for black community," May 17,
1994), Kurt Gayle noted that "tension between Metro's black and Jewish
communities probably has been exacerbated by the role of the Canadian
Jewish Congress in the controversy. The CJC's role seemed, to some members
of the black community, to parallel the allegedly 'paternalistic,'
'meddling' role of the Anti-Defamation League in the U.S."

Rabbi Avahram Toledano, a leader in the Jewish-supremacist Kach movement
founded by the late Rabbi Kahane, conducted a lecture tour of Canada in
1991. Despite his bigoted views, Toledano was invited to speak to a crowd
of 300 at Toronto's Shaarii Tefilah synagogue. There Toledano told his
audience: "There is no room (i.e., in "Greater" Israel) for a people
(i.e., the Arabs) that doesn't recognize Jewish sovereignty" (The
Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, July 1991, p. 58). Like his
mentor Rabbi Kahane, Toledano advocated the "transfer" solution to the
Arab "problem." That is, forcing the Arab population to leave Israel and
its occupied territories; action that would bring a lot of grief to a lot
of people.

However, unlike the Black Muslim clergman Khalid Abdul Muhammad, Rabbi
Avahram Toledano was not compelled to address the ethusiastic crowd at the
Toronto synagogue through the medium of the telephone. The rabbi was
neither barred nor expelled from Canada for his racist and offensive views
at the behest of the Canadian Jewish Congress.

* For Bernie Farber, who admires the free-enterprise system, I offer this
last example of CJC intrusion into the marketplace of ideas.

In January 1990, a young Calgary entrepreneur began selling a lapel-button
showing a semi-clothed Black man bearing a spear, a turbaned Sikh, and an
Oriental wearing a Chinese coolie hat. The three were portrayed joining
hands in a half-circle around a nerdy-looking White man in a pair of owly
glasses. The caption on the pin asked: "Who is the minority in Canada?"

Both the federal minister for multiculturalism, Gerry Weiner, and the
mayor of Calgary, Al Duerr, denounced the pin as racist and offensive. The
Canadian Jewish Congress and its sister organization, B'nai B'rith Canada,
also called the pin racist and offensive ("Lapel pins are racist, Calgary
mayor says," The Toronto Globe and Mail, January 6, 1990). However,
Revenue Canada ruled, following an investigation, that the lapel pin did
not incite hatred within the scope of the Criminal Code and that item
could continue being imported into Canada--from Taiwan!

The young Calgary entrepeneur, reaping the whirlwind of a million dollars'
worth of free publicity generated by the controversy stirred by, among
others, the CJC, reported that the lapel pins were "selling like hotcakes"
("Lapel pins not hate propaganda: Revenue Canada," The Canadian Jewish
News, January 25, 1990).

==============================================================================

Bernie Farber's earlier exultation over entrepreneurial capitalism aside,
the fact remains his employer, the Canadian Jewish Congress, receives/d
federal handouts from the Department of Heritage and Multiculturalism;
causing the CJC's "activities" to be partly underwritten by Canadian
taxpayers, who are therefore in a sense stakeholders in CJC "activities."

If they are displeased Canadian taxpayers have every right - as I did, and
as Bernie Farber said I might - to communicate their displeasure either to
the public or the proper authorities. Bernie Farber may have
mischaracterized my effort disparagingly as one intended "to keep [my]
minions [i.e., servile followers] informed," but that's O.K. That's not
unexepected.

Ironically enough, minions was virtually what Gerald Caplan accused
Canadian Jewish leaders of being when he skewered them for their
uncritical support of Israel ["Mindless cheerleaders for Israel?", The
Toronto Star, May 13, 1990].

Gerald Caplan: "Is there no limit to what Canadian Jewish leaders will
tolerate from Israel? Wrong question. Is there any level of iniquity
they'll fail to celebrate? ... Their behavior is not only immoral; its is
counter-productive."

Mr. Farber insists that the "CJC has the right to continue its struggle
against racism and antisemitism."

Armed with telltale facts, Mr. Caplan questions its good faith in this
regard, as well as that of its sister organizations:

"When Israel renewed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia earlier this year
[1990], it was revealed they would also be sending military advisers and
arms, including cluster bombs, to Menghistu's demented, murderous [not to
mention anti-Semitic] regime. Was there a peep of concern, let alone
dissent, from the Canadian Jewish establishment for this heinous act? Has
there been even an eyebrow raised at the initimate 15-year collaboration
between Israel and [a racist] South Africa, actively promoted by the
leaders of both major Israeli parties, involving not only commercial trade
but weapons development, military co-operation and joint nuclear research,
very possibly including the joint testing of a nuclear bomb."

Mr. Caplan ends his article by suggesting Jews in Canada are insensitive
to religious and political oppression. I disagree; my own personal
experience tells me otherwise.

I would, however, agree with Gerald Caplan that they are being poorly led.

==============================================================================

In fact, Bernie Farber *is* the public relations officer for the CJC.

The July 18 Globe and Mail describes him as the "national director of
community relations for the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC)..."

It seems to me that Bernie Farber's presence on the Net is an extension of
his job with the CJC. I was and (still am) inclined to believe that he
isn't there as an Internet hobbyist, but rather as a CJC lobbyist,
valiantly flogging the CJC message. I welcome his presence, but I disagree
with some of his message.

The only Bernie Farber I know has been the one who's routinely introduced
to us as "Bernie Farber of the Canadian Jewish Congress." That's his
public persona, and that's all I know and can relate to; I'm one of the
public and Mr. Farber is a public relations officer for the CJC, which is
on the receiving end of public money, and we're "relating," as it were, in
a public arena; namely, the discussion groups that were intended for just
such discussions. So far, so good.

While you see in him as an extremist "in the truest sense of the word";
what I see is another lobbyist. Moreover, I see this lobbyist and his
lobby as one; in the same way, for example, that I see Mr. Mahood and the
anti-smoking lobby as one.

If I were to chat up Mr. Mahood on the Net, I would most definitely refer
to the anti-smoking lobby group that he's deeply involved with.

I do the same with Bernie Farber and the CJC.

The way things are unfolding nowadays it's sometimes the very popular who
need defending. Being a good liberal with an impressive résumé of going to
bat for noble and worthy causes is no longer any guarantee you'll be
sheltered from a storm of abuse.

Here's a couple examples of humanitarian icons whose number came up recently:

In France, Abbé Pierre was driven into exile in Italy after he stood up
for his old chum, Roger Garaudy, after Garaudy published his controversial
book, The Founding Myths of Israeli Politics. This after years of being
routinely hailed in poll after poll as the man the French admired most.
His work with the poor and the homeless was legendary. Abbé Pierre had
also been decorated as a hero of the French Resistance during World War 2.
No matter.

In Canada, the writer and broadcaster June Callwood, the personification
of goodwill toward AIDS sufferers, battered women, and the poor was first
hounded off the Board of Director of Nellie's, a battered women's hostel
she founded in the '70s, and then from the Writer's Union of Canada.
Reason: allegations that Callwood was racist toward women of colour. She
wasn't, and she isn't. But no matter.

==============================================================================

Alain Pilote, an editor with the "Michael" Journal, informs me that that I
was misinformed as regards a letter of apology having been sent to the
Pilgrims of St. Michael from David Dingwall's office. Otherwise, he
confirmed what I wrote and gave me some additional information.

The facts are these:

1. In 1993, the Pilgrims of St. Michael distributed 10 million copies of
an 8-page supplement of their publication, the "Michael" Journal. The
supplement expounded a Social Credit philosophy of economics as a solution
to poverty in Canada. It contained no reference to Jews.

2. In 1994, the CJC made allegations of anti-Semitic hate-mongering
against the "Michael" Journal to David Dingwall, the Minister of Public
Works, who in turn wrote the Pilgrims and accused them to peddling a
"hate-sheet."

3. Mr. Dingwall then addressed a letter to the president of Canada Post
asking that CP stop delivering the "Michael" Journal.

4. Delivery of the "Michael" Journal was, in consequence, interrupted by
CP for 2 days in the Toronto area.

5. In the March-April 1994 issue of the "Michael" Journal editor Alain
Pilote refuted Dingwall's (and, by extension, the CJC's) allegations of
anti-Semitism, and petitioned Prime Minister Chrétien in these words:

"We ask Prime Minister Chrétien this question: Does this statement of
Minister Dingwall reflect the actual position of the Government on the
"Michael" Journal, or is it simply Mr. Dingwall's personal opinion? Mr.
Chrétien, we would like to remind you of these lines of the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms which your friend, Pierre Elliott Trudeau,
considers as his greatest legacy to our nation: 'Everyone has the
following fundamental freedoms...freedom of thought, belief, opinion and
expression.' We can understand that you may not agree with all that is
said in our journal, but if the Government wants to ban it, this is a
gesture that is worthy of the worst dictatorial regimes on the globe. If
Mr. Dingwall's words only reflect his own opinion, we ask you to call him
to order, to tell him to stop making a dingbat of himself with such
foolish statements and to apologize for his slanderous words against the
"Michael" Journal. If your Minister of Public Works is too incompetent to
know the difference between what is anti-Semitic and what is not, he
should resign (or you should get rid of him) - immediately."

6. The Pilgrims of St. Michael undertook a grassroots campaign of doorstep
advocacy in David Dingwall's Nova Soctia riding (and two adjoining
ridings) to inform his constituents of the Minister's allegations and of
their monetary philosophy. They report being well-received and note that
many sympathizers sent letters of support in defence of the Pilgrims to
the Minister.

7. It is July 1996. The Pilgrims continue being active in their work, as
they have been for the past 50 years. The "Michael" Journal continues to
be published and distributed by Canada Post. The Pilgrims assume the case
is now closed, since they have heard no more about this matter from the
authorites.

Is it in fact over for them? They assume it *is* over.

Perhaps Bernie Farber can enlighten us on that score.

The spectre of government leaning heavily on a religious minority is
nothing new in Canada.

Many may remember the Duplessis regime's persecutorial treatment of the
Jehovah Witnesses in Quebec in the 1950s, the Roncarelli affair and
similar cases.

Of course, the Jehovah's Witnesses had been treated far more harshly in
Germany during the 1940s.

=============================================================================

Those two sentences up there are unclear. I'm assuming RG made a small
grammatical error up there which could lead some to jump to the wrong
conclusion.

In the first sentence, RG mentions Gary Botting and his own admirable
defence of "the rights of professional liars." The word "liars" is
pluralized.

But in the second sentence RG refers to "*his* rights" and said "that *he*
is a professional liar and hate-monger."

A careless reader could assume that RG was suddenly referring to Botting
in the second sentence, and had characterized Botting as being both "a
professional liar and hate-monger." In fact, that's what I assumed, to
begin with.

Which of course isn't true of Botting at all. Despite the intransigent
attitude of some other kinds of "professionals," Botting is and was a
libertarian fired up with a kind of a evangelical zeal. There's a
plausible explanation for this, I think.

As a young man, Gary Botting had served as a missionary for his church and
done some outreach work for it in India and Hong Kong. Members of the
faith Botting subscribed to have had a history of religious persecution.
When he quit the church (or, was "disfellowshipped," rather), my hunch is
he probably went with libertarianism as a way of looking for a kind of
substitute secularist cause.

To call Botting overqualified is an understatement. He had a bushel of
degrees in 1989 when he enroled at the University of Calgary to study law.
In June, when the Chinese Army overran Tiannamen Square, some Chinese
graduate students at U. of C. turned to Botting for help in processing
their claims for refugee status. Which he gladly did.

That fall, when he ran for the aldermanic office in Ward 4 in Calgary, one
of his campaign workers was one of the several graduate students from
China whom Botting had assisted. Which didn't stop the local media from
mischaracterizing Botting as a "racist," etc., thanks to some - to borrow
RG's words - "professional liars." All because he had the temerity to go
to bat for free speech for Ernst Zundel and James Keegstra.

But that's Canada for you. As Neil Bissoondath said: "It's the way public
conversation is carried on in this country: lots of time to talk about
everything except ideas." Sort of like a.r on an off day.

==============================================================================

Thanks to RG for alerting me to the transparency of "my double standard."
The mentoring (hectoring?) is appreciated.

Now, I'll either have to work harder at dissembling, or else resign myself
to the level playingfield where all may join the debate as equals. Seems
to me my second choice would be the easier one.

Know thine enemy

Le Devoir columnist Josee Legault compared Canada to Nazi Germany in a
recent column; it was typical of her attacks on Canada's reputation recent
column; it was typical of her attacks on Canada's reputation

By WILLIAM JOHNSON

Ottawa Sun

ÊGATINEAU, Que. -- Know thine enemy. The most dangerous enemy is the one
who comes daily smiling into your home.

ÊCanadians do not easily sense that they have real enemies. Wherever they
go travelling, the name and the flag of Canada are treated with respect.
There is one exception: within Canada. The domestic enemy wants to destroy
our country, lies and distorts so as to attack its reputation, betrays by
word and deed a malevolence towards Canadians who speak English.

ÊWho fits this profile? Try Josee Legault. You see her constantly on your
television and hear her on your radio. She sounds off on Mike Duffy's
Sunday Edition and on Peter Gzowski's Morningside. And what does Legault
say?

ÊIn her column last week in Le Devoir, Legault compared Canada to Nazi
Germany. And why? Because Canadians have taken, lately, to displaying
their flag.

Ê"Ein Volk, ein Reich ... ein Flag." Such was the headline over her column.

ÊContemptuously, she applied to Canada the slogan of Hitler's Nazis: "One
Realm, one Folk, one Fuhrer." And she salted her text with evocations of
the rituals of the National Socialists, such as "the new fetishism for the
Canadian flag."

ÊThe storm troopers can't be far behind.

Ê"Ottawa is in a state of delirium. Everything there is submerged under a
tide of maple leaves on flags or effigies ... All along the Confederation
Boulevard, a ring which physically forges together Ottawa and Hull -- sad
symbol of Hull's geopolitical annexation -- you would almost think you
were in Munich in 1938."

ÊAnnexation? Legault's unsubtle reference is to the annexation -- the
"anschluss" -- of Austria and the Sudetenland by Hitler. Hull, which voted
overwhelmingly against secession last October, is presented as raped by a
foreign aggressor. And, Legault, not content with saying it once, says it
again in case anyone missed her point.

Ê"The political annexation of Hull by the federal government -- a
Quebecois city which is more than 90% Francophone -- is embodied in that
horror baptised 'Confederation Boulevard.' "

ÊAll this could be dismissed as mere sophomoric rant poisoned by paranoia.
But Legault, despite or for her naked enmity, is lionized by the news
media. She is introduced by Mike Duffy as "distinguished political
scientist Josee Legault" -- despite the fact that she has yet to get her
PhD and published one book -- a reworking of her MA thesis -- that was
chiefly notable for its anglophobia and its ignorance.

ÊOn the first page, she showed her hateful vision of English-speaking
Quebecers, the subject of her study. For her, whether they were Jewish or
gentile, white or black, whatever their ethnic origin, if their language
was English, they were conquerors.

Ê"Deprived of their prestigious status of conquerors, those who are now
called the Anglo-Quebecois are reduced to lamenting in the pages of The
New Yorker," Legault wrote.

ÊIt was, of course, Mordecai Richler, a Jew, who "lamented" in The New
Yorker. No matter. For Legault, all anglo-Quebecers are eternal
conquerors.

ÊThey all lived in Quebec like white South-Africans enforcing apartheid on
French-speaking Quebecers -- until Bill 101 in 1977 deprived them of their
status of overlords.

Ê"If the Anglophones say they no longer feel at home in Quebec, that's
mostly because some of the measures advocated by Bill 101, such as the
partial francization of the workplace or of commercial signs, brought an
abrupt end to a state of social, cultural and economic apartheid which had
lasted more than two centuries."

ÊThe book contained grotesque errors and misrepresentations, as I've shown
elsewhere. It all served her thesis that the anglos had to be held down by
stringent laws because they lusted after a restoration of their previous
status as conquerors. Any softening of the language laws would encourage
their evil ambitions.

ÊBy this flawed and demagogic essay, Legault achieved instant celebrity.
Le Devoir published three excerpts. The Gazette soon took her on as a
columnist. She was the expert on English Quebec, consulted by the Quebec
government and invited by every radio and television program.

ÊThe beautiful people controlling our media love radical chic. They fawn
on French-speaking commentators who are anti-Canadian and anglophobic, and
English-speaking analysts who are lambs, radically obsequious towards
Quebec nationalism. That helped us get where we are today.

Know thine enemy

Le Devoir columnist Josee Legault compared Canada to Nazi Germany in a
recent column; it was typical of her attacks on Canada's reputation recent

We first heard of Mr. Sol Littman back in 1972, when his name appeared in
the text of the book by the Rev. A.C. Forrest, the editor of The Observer,
the main organ of the United Church of Canada, titled *The Unholy Land*.

At *that* time it was any discussion of the Palestinian question that our
old friend Mr. Littman was very anxious to block. Nowadays, it seems he's
obsessed by a proclivity by some to indulge in Holocaust revisionism, as
well as some issues pertaining to racial identity.

Rev. Forrest makes it abundantly clear to his readers what craven whores
the mainstream publishers were in the the 1970s - no different from today,
really, and how they caved in to special interest groups, with censorious
old futzers like Sol Littman leading the charge.

Looks like the censorship-happy Sol Littman isn't contemplating retirement
yet. It was once said of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien that he was
"Yesterday's man."

Seems to me the label would be better applied to Sol Littman. He's out of
his depth in the Age of the Net. Some kind soul ought to pull him aside
and let him know what a fool he's been making of himself.

Somebody ought to remind ol' Sol that it's now 1996, not 1972.

The weekend edition of The Globe and Mail carried the following item from
Canadian Press in its July 20 issue.

Internet server home to racist sites

VANCOUVER - The Simon Wiesenthal Centre says a small Internet provider in
the Okanagan Valley has become the largest site in Canada for white
supremacist and Holocaust denial material.

At least 12 groups promoting white supremacy and hate against minorities
are using the Fairview Technology Centre in Oliver [British Columbia,
Canada] to promote their views, the human-rights group said Thursday.

Fairview's site includes two host web pages, Freedom Site and Skin-Net,
which provide access to the pages of a dozen other similar groups.

Some of the web page organizers are connected to Ernst Zundel, the Toronto
Holocaust-denier, said Sol Littman, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's Canadian
representative.

Mr. Littman wrote to Bernard Klatt, owner of Fairview, to tell him he
didn't have to provide service to such groups.

Mr. Klatt said he knows about the groups.

Asked whether he is concerned, he said: "Not yet. Should I be? I am aware
they are there. I probably should go loook at them."

:Bernie Farber responds:
>
> This is just what I would expect from the likes of Mr. Slepokura, find a
> "Jew" quote him finding fault with "Jewish Leaders" and wrap himself in
> respectability. Well, Mr. S, these sly manoevers are as old as the hills.

> Interestingly, While Mr. Caplan may have critisized some Canadian Jewish
> leaders, Canadian Jewry is ofcourse not a monolith, I failed to,see in any of
> your posts, any mention of CJC, B'nai Brith or for that matter any Jewish
> organization per se. Just another slip-up I sguess.

==============================================================================

A "slip-up" that's easily remedied. After all...To err is human; to get
paid for it divine. I wonder: is this Bernie Farber the Internet hobbyist,
or Bernie Farber the Canadian Jewish Congress lobbyist, whose commentaries
so sternly rebuke me? IOW am I, an overburdend Canadian taxpayer--the CJC
being on the collecting end of federal largesse--helping to subsidize Mr.
Farber's Internet activism? Or, is this his private and personal venture?

The references that I made to Gerald Caplan's article in the Toronto Star
["Mindless Cheerleaders for Israel?", May 13, 1990] were nothing but a
direct result of a simple association I made between it and a phrase Mr.
Farber employed, snidely alleging that I was posting information intended
to keep "[my] minions informed," the word "minions" implying servile
followers? Or, IOW, mindless cheerleaders.

Hence, my references to Gerald Caplan's 1990 article. Had Mr. Farber not
made any reference to "[my so-called] minions," it follows that I, too,
wouldn't have thought to then follow up with allusions to the Caplan
article, with its telltale headline: "Mindless cheerleaders for Israel?"
Sauce. Goose. Gander. It's a reflexive thought process that's as old the
hills.

The fact that Gerald Caplan, like Mr. Farber, also happened to be Jewish
apparently is of considerablle significance to Mr. Farber. So, naturally,
he assumes it must have had some significance for me, too. Mind you, he's
simply projecting. Which we all do, of course, to some extent, now and
again. Another thought process that's as old as the hills.

At any rate, here's Gerald Caplan's article in full. Please note Mr.
Caplan had in the course of his article carefully listed the following
Canadian Jewish organizations: The Canadian Jewish Congress; the
Canada-Israel Committee; B'nai B'rith Canada; and the Canadian Friends of
the Jerusalem College of Technology; in that order; casting all of them in
an unflattering light, to say the least.

Since this article was published, Baruch Goldstein and Yigal Amir have
become household names across the planet. When viewed against the backdrop
of their hoary, grisly deeds, Mr. Caplan's article acquires an almost
prophetic aura.

                       Mindless cheerleaders for Israel?

Leaders of Canada's Jewish community are doing a profound disservice to
Canadian Jewry and the state of Israel. By either blessing, or justifying,
or remaining silent about every reprehensible activity of both the Israeli
government and Israeli extremists, they undermine their own credibility in
the eyes of many thoughtful Canadians, Jews included.

Their behavior is not only immoral; it is counter-productive.

Never mind the routine beatings, torture, killings and harassment of
Palestinians by Jews. Take the recent move of 150 Israeli fundamentalists,
surreptitiously subsidized by the Shamir government, into the old
Christian quarter of Jerusalem. The mayor of Jerusalem, a Jew, calls it
"stupid and ignorant." The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the
principal pro-Israel lobby in the U.S., warns that American Jews may now
cut back their financial support of Israel. The director of the
Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith in the U.S. calls the
settlement "provocative and insensitive," while the president of the
American Jewish Congress is "appalled" by the move.

Then, there's Canada. The Canadian Jewish Congress issues a statement
reaffirming its belief that Jews have a right to live in any part of
Israel. The Canada-Israel Committee affirms this same right but with the
mealy mouthed qualification that "the manner in which recent events have
unfolded is disquieting."

And worst of all: The Canadian B'nai B'rith. A B'nai B'rith delegation of
20 Jewish leaders from across Canada, in Israel when the Jerusalem issue
explodes, are ready, aye ready, to perform as mindless cheerleaders. "We
support," a spokesperson says, "what the duly elected government of Israel
does" - a peculiarly witless and uninformed principle.

And to demonstrate the boundless nature of their irresponsibility, the
delegation then visits and pays homage at a Jewish settlement that had
been founded by Rabbi Moshe Levinger. Levinger, a fanatical leader of
Israel's Jewish settler movement and a bigot who calls Arabs "dogs," was
just convicted of killing an unarmed, unthreatening Palestinian

Is there no limit to what Canadian Jewish leaders will tolerate from
Israel? Wrong question. Is there any level of iniquity they'll fail to
celebrate? Is there a more monstrous Israeli figure than Ari Sharon,
chauvinist, authoritarian, ultra-hawk, architect of the 1982 invasion of
Lebanon who failed, an Israeli commission of enquiry found, to prevent the
bloody massacre by Israel's Lebanese allies of more than 700 helpless
Palestinians in the Shatilla and Sabra refugee camps?

Not ghastly enough, it seems, for the Canadian Friends of the Jerusalem
College of Technology, whose board has chosen to invite Sharon to speak at
a Toronto fund raising event. What kind of message does this invitation
send to Canadians? I asked their official spokesperson. "We're not
politically naive or stupid," he replied. "The board weighed all the
considerations before deciding. There were lots of considerations involved
here."

So the question remains: Is there any act of "the duly elected government
of Israel" that will shame the leaders of Canadian Jewry into saying, with
Jewish leaders in America and in Israel itself: "Enough is enough. You are
despoiling every great historic tradition of Judaism!"

When Israel renewed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia earlier this year,
it was revealed they would also be sending military advisers and arms,
including cluster bombs, to Menghistu's demented, murderous regime. Was
there a peep of concern let alone dissent, from the Canadian Jewish
establishment for this heinous act? Has there been even an eyebrow raised
at the intimate 15-year collaboration between Israel and South Africa,
actively promoted by the leaders of both major Israeli parties, involving
not only commercial trade but weapons development, military co-operation
and joint nuclear research, very possibly including the joint testing of a
nuclear bomb.

"Because of their historic experience," writes Irving Abella in A Coat of
Many Colors, his new history of Canadian Jewry, "Jews have tended to be
sensitive to oppression and to threats to religious and political
freedom." Except, it appears, In Canada and Israel.

Yet, those of us who dare speak out for traditional Jewish values are
rewarded with menacing and abusive midnight phone calls. Why pick on us?
Why not harass instead those 780 American Jewish leaders who, according to
a recent poll by the Israel-Diaspora Institute, are overwhelmingly opposed
to the most fundamental Israeli policies of recent years?
