Archive/File: people/m/mcvay.ken/press/Toronto_Star.990322 Last-Modified: 1999/03/30 Source & Copyright: Toronto Star, March 22, 1999 (D4) Internet can target women, forum told By Tanya Ho, Staff Reporter [...] Speaker Ken McVay, a member of the Vancouver police department for 19 years, said advocacy groups are also guilty of apathy in response to cyberhate. In 1995, McVay came across an Edmonton man's Web site that targeted homosexuals. After contacting a Toronto advocacy group in July, 1997, and a gay advocacy group in the fall of 1997, McVay said he's still waiting for a response. Silence welcomes hate crimes, he said. "Unfortunately, hate is a marginalized issue," said McVay, stressing that a collective powerful voice of millions opposing Internet hate is absent. [...] Transcription note: Mr. McVay is not a member of the Vancouver Police Department, and never has been. The reporter apparently confused Mr. McVay's bio with that of another man, whose biographic information was above McVay's in the conference press handouts; the other man is a police officer. The homophobic material which concerned McVay was not found on a web site, but within a series of UseNet news articles posted by an Edmonton man over a period of several years.
