In those days there was a significant time lag between 'invention' and 
public familiarity. Prior to the fifties, there were NO magnetic tape 
media available to either industry or the masses. Such devices were 
experimental in nature. Alva Edison made many such discoveries & 
inventions, most of which took decades to reach consumers.

_Studies hit 'Bell Curve' linking of race, IQ_ (The Boston Globe)

(May 7, 1996 2:17 p.m. EDT) -- When it hit bookstores a year and a half 
ago,
"The Bell Curve" rocked the worlds of race relations, welfare reform and
social science by asserting that blacks do worse than whites on IQ tests 
for
mostly genetic reasons.

Now the pendulum is swinging in the other direction, with the upcoming
publication of a number of books and research papers that punch holes in 
the
influential and highly controversial work of Charles Murray of the 
American
Enterprise Institute and the late Richard Herrnstein of Harvard 
University.

The new books are not just criticisms, however. They are major research
efforts, as complex and deeply researched as the 850-page work they aim 
to
counter.

Reduced to their essence, these books point to poverty and prejudice, 
not
genes, as reasons for intelligence differences between blacks and whites.

They also fault Murray's and Herrnstein's scientific methods.

Though unlikely to be as widely discussed as "The Bell Curve," the new 
books
undoubtedly will bolster the liberal view of race relations and social
welfare as much as "The Bell Curve" did the conservative one, say
specialists in the field.

"It's a minor industry right now," said Christopher Jencks, a 
Northwestern
University sociologist who joins Harvard's Kennedy School of Government 
next
fall and has been deeply involved in the debate from the outset.

"The Bell Curve," Jencks said, "contributed to an atmosphere of
polarization, animosity and distrust." These new books, he added, will 
show
how "many things in 'The Bell Curve' don't stand up."

Murray himself predicts that none of the new works will succeed in
discrediting "The Bell Curve," though he is bracing for his book to be
battered again, as it was in the fall of 1994.

"The book will be killed, stomped on and left bleeding in the streets," 
said
Murray. "But the science in 'The Bell Curve' was so cautious that I am
willing to bet money that nothing substantial in the book's science will 
be
overturned."

"The Bell Curve" has many points other than the one about race, genetics 
and
IQ. That one, however, was the most explosive, since it reopened the old
nature-vs.-nurture debate, came down strongly on the side of IQ as
"substantially heritable" and seemed to argue that welfare payments, 
early
learning efforts, affirmative action and other government social 
programs
were of little use.

The two most important works in the anti-"Bell Curve" aftershock come 
from
the Brookings Institution in Washington and the University of California 
at
Berkeley. Both will be published by fall.

The Brookings effort is "Does the Bell Curve Ring True," by Charles
Schultze, Thomas Kane and William Dickens.

It asserts, among other things, that IQ is a small factor in income
distribution; that antipoverty programs such as Head Start are both
cost-effective and have a benefit -- albeit a small one -- on IQ levels;
that affirmative action is effective and is not unduly penalizing whites;

and that race is not a determining factor in heritability of intelligence.


"We hope our book will be important for the fall campaign," said Dickens. 
"I
don't know how big a role 'The Bell Curve' had, but it did make it 
easier
for the Republicans to pursue their agenda."

The Berkeley book is "Inequality by Design: Cracking the 'Bell Curve' 
Myth,"
by a team of sociologists led by Claude Fischer.

It argues that intelligence is not the main determinant of who gets ahead 
in
society and shows how much economic inequality in the United States
contributes to the IQ gap.

An interesting aspect of this book is that it also points to IQ gaps 
around
the world between dominant and subordinated groups -- whites and blacks 
in
America, natives and Koreans in Japan, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews in
Israel and Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland -- and says 
those
gaps are closing as the subordinated groups make economic progress.

"You expect the gap in the process of caste formation," said Fischer. 
"And
when caste positions change, you get a convergence."

Researchers at Harvard, Penn State, the University of Chicago and the
University of Wisconsin are also involved in studies that take on "The 
Bell
Curve."

One significant effort, by researchers at Northwestern University and
Columbia Teacher's College in the current issue of Child Development, 
points
strongly to poverty as the main reason for the gap in IQ scores.

In a study of 800 black and white children from birth to age 5, poverty 
and
home environment accounted for 80 percent of the IQ difference, 
researchers
said, and the 3-point gap that remained after controlling for those 
factors
is considered statistically insignificant.

"IQ differences between black and white children are almost completely
eliminated by adjusting for differences in neighborhood, economic
conditions, family poverty, maternal education and learning experiences,
"
the study concludes.

Greg Duncan of Northwestern, one of the study's authors, said he hopes 
his
work will help to "redirect the welfare reform debate" so that it at 
least
preserves programs that aid children in deep poverty.

"I really fear that the attempt to place categorical restrictions on 
welfare
and to deny benefits will cause distribution of income among the poor to
become more unequal," Duncan said. "That could have a terrible effect."

The book that generated all this counter-research sold more than 500,000
copies. Most of these new works, Jencks and others predict, will be lucky 
to
sell 5,000 each.

Not only did "The Bell Curve" trigger these new books, it has 
reverberated
widely through academia. A recent electronic-mail query of American 
colleges
and universities on the subject produced a torrent of responses from
scholars who have been part of the debate and have done subsequent 
research
on their own.

These academics are almost solidly negative in their views of "The Bell
Curve."

"Within the sophisticated research community, the opinion has been 
virtually
unanimous that "The Bell Curve" was a primitive, oversimplistic and 
flawed
analysis," said Craig T. Ramey, a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics 
at
the University of Alabama and an early critic.

But Ramey and others acknowledge that the book's influence on public 
opinion
has been much more long-lasting. As he put it: "In the public mind, it 
has
not nearly been debunked."

"The long-term effect of 'The Bell Curve' has been to confirm 
preexisting
perceptions on both the left and the right about education, social 
success
and crime," said Roger Masters, a professor of government at Dartmouth.

That, he said, has forced researchers to go over old ground and has 
"slowed
down new research by at least five years."

absentia of the 1985 hijacking of the Achille lauro cruise ship, the 
daughter of KLINGHOFFER, killed during the siege, said.

Convicted was Mohammed Abbas, 48, who was sentenced to life in prison. He 
remains at large. Authorities are working with Interpol to search for

Georgia Attorney General Mike Bowers said yesterday (6/27/96) that an
Olympic rule that bars people from waving nauthorized banners, including 
the Confederate and state flag, violates free-speech rights and should 
not be enforced by police.  The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games 
(ACOG), under pressure from Jewish groups, has ruled that only national 
flags of participating countries are allowed at events and people with 
unauthorized flags will be prevented from entering or ejected.  ACOG 
insists the rule does not target the Confederate flag or the Georgia 
state flag, which resembles the Confederate flag. Charles Lunsford, 
spokesman for a pro-flag group said his group was offering free legal 
help to anyone barred from waving the state flag.  He said "We've been 
watching what ACOG has done for some time, and we find it terribly 
disturbing they would express such arrogance as to have such an event in 
the middle of the South and do everything they can to hide the fact 
they're in the South,"  Georgia state representative Tyrone Brooks said 
of the state flag:  "This is not an historic flag.  This is a flag that 
was changed as an act of defiance against school integration and voting 
rights for African-Americans."

because he can't believe anyone is taking it seriously."

The security charges centered around Craig Livingstone, now at the heart 
of the investigation over the ordering  and culling of hundreds of FBI 
files by White House top aides.

In typical Clintonese, he waffled, "Now I know for a fact that is not 
true," speaking of Hillary's being accused by Aldrich of hiring 
Livingstone, as reported by an aide to Hillary Clinton. First he had said 
he didn't know who hired Livingstone.

Kazars?? Kulaks?? Kerasaks?? If you are capable of being serious, let me 
ask this question:

Can most American & European j*ws trace their ethnic roots to semitic 
bloodlines, to the House of Judea, to the House of Israel?? If you can't 
answer that, ask your rebbi. discuss this topic with him.

Most of the so-called j*ws mentioned above are CONVERTS, and have no 
claim in fact to being ETHNIC j*ws.

My assessment is that the rebbi is probably aged and does not want to 
take the BIG LIE to his grave.  I have reposted the original note that 
was on the NG, the story having been taken from the New York Post:
