The Beacon, August 1995 (Excerpts) Freiman Pedagogical Center Attracts Researchers, Educators & Students The reference room in the David Freiman National Pedagogical Center at Massuah is a hub of activity for the year 'round for researchers, educators, community center cultural coordinators, IDF education officers, youth movement leaders and high school students. The Center was named in memory of the late David Freiman, Holocaust survivor, husband, father and grandfather who had been an active member of the Toronto Jewish community. Containing all of Massuah's educational programs and teaching aids, including the most modern audio-visual equipment, the Center is completely computerized and linked to universities and other facilities across Israel. Included in the teaching aids are portable exhibits, slides, documentary films, filmed testimonies and feature films. Many of the survivors' testimonies were filmed in Massuah's own studio which has been endowed in the names of Mendel and Helen Green of Toronto; others were filmed at Yale University as part of a cooperative venture with Massuah and the U.S. National Holocaust Memorial. In addition, Massuah's staff provides professional guidance and training for teachers interested in developing Holocaust educational projects for their schools, municipal and kibbutz cultural centers, IDF units and youth movements. The reference facilities are also used extensively by high school students who have elected to do a comprehensive research project on the Holocaust in lieu of a matriculation exam. They spend many hours in the reference room under the guidance of the Pedagogical Center staff. Among its other activities, Massuah grants an annual award to educators for outstanding educational initiatives and scholarships for high school graduates for excellence in research studies. The Massuah staff has also prepared teaching guides on the Holocaust that are available for teachers around the world. ..the Institute is used as a model by many educators who admire its teaching methods and curriculum which are highly successful in reach [sic] diverse students, with a significant range of abilities and backgrounds.
