Archive/File: orgs/american/united-states/department-of-defense/deomi/holocaust-revisionism.003 Last-Modified: 1997/07/12 INTRODUCTION The Ninth Revisionist Conference was held in California in 1989 and was hosted by the Institute for Historical Review (IHR), a pseudo-historical society that, among other things, propagates the belief that the Holocaust did not happen as described by "establishment" historians. The following was part of a speech given by Fred Leuchter, a designer and builder of gas chambers for American prisons, after a visit and "scientific" investigation of Auschwitz. 1988 was a very informative and likewise disturbing year. I was appalled to learn that much of what I was taught in school about twentieth-century history and World War II was a myth, if not a lie. I was first amazed; then annoyed; then aware: the myth of the Holocaust was dead... After a thorough examination of the alleged execution facilities in Poland and their associated crematories, the only conclusion that can be arrived at by a rational, responsible person is the absurdity of the notion that any of these facilities were ever capable of, or were utilized as, execution gas chambers. (11:1,8) His speech has since been turned into a pamphlet and has been a major source of attention and revenue for the IHR. This brief excerpt from the extensive materials available at the Conference clearly captures the main operational concept of the IHR, the misrepresentation of historical truths by those with a hidden agenda. In this paper we will look at this phenomena described as Holocaust "revisionism" by the revisionists themselves, and Holocaust denial by many historians. We will not refute revisionism here but merely report its many activities. Refuting revisionism is similar to refuting racism: raisa ipso locutor, the thing speaks for itself. We will explore some of the beliefs, organizations, and key players in what is rapidly becoming a world-wide phenomenon. We will discuss the ramifications that such distortions of history can have on us as a nation, and the possible effect on our fighting forces.
