W. >Norton & Company, 1985) The dust cover describes it as "Seven million >people in the 'breadbasket of Europe' were deliberately starved to death at >Stalin's command. This story has been suppressed for half a century. Suppressed, eh? How horrible. Imagine that -- the notion of somebody trying to deny the murder of millions of people. You'd think that they've got Zundelscheisse in their heads or something, to be that evil. But wait. Let's not necessarily take Ingrid's word for it. Let's do some quick research. Let's take a look at the nearest reference book I have handy in my CDROM: "Human Rights and Social Justice, 1928 "The first Soviet Five-Year Plan launched by Josef Stalin in October will bring liquidation or exile to Siberia for millions of kulaks (rich peasants) who resist collectivization of agriculture (see 1928). "The People's Chronology is licensed from Henry Holt and Company, Inc. Copyright © 1995, 1996 by James Trager. All rights reserved." I guess this mysterious "they" didn't keep it secret from James Trager and the folks at Henry Holt. or "World History "Rise of Totalitarians: 1930-39 "Russia ".... Millions perished in a series of manufactured disasters: elimination (1929-34) of kulaks (peasant landowners), severe famine (1932-33), party purges (Great Purge, 1936-38), suppression of nationalities; and poor conditions in labor camps. The World Almanac¨ and Book of Facts 1996 is licensed from Funk & Wagnalls Corporation. Copyright © 1995 by Funk & Wagnalls Corporation. All rights reserved. The World Almanac and The World Almanac and Book of Facts are registered trademarks of Funk & Wagnalls Corporation." Hmmm... "they" didn't hide it from the folks at Funk & Wagnalls, either. But maybe they didn't put it in Encarta? "Stalin reacted to lagging agricultural production in the late 1920s by a ruthless, personally supervised expropriation of grain from peasants in Siberia. When other crises threatened in late 1929, he expanded what had been a moderate collectivization program into a nationwide offensive against the peasantry. Millions were displaced, and unknown millions died in the massive collectivization." "Stalin, Joseph," Microsoft(R) Encarta(R) 96 Encyclopedia. (c) 1993-1995 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. (c) Funk & Wagnalls Corporation. All rights reserved. Well, that's three out of three. But maybe it's part of this hidden-in-plain-sight technique that always seems to fool Ingrid, who doesn't seem to be able to find a clue, or such apparently rare and hard-to-find reference works as the World Almanac and Book of Facts, which, after all, is only available in pretty near every library and general-purpose bookstore on the planet. Or, perhaps, Ingrid's lying again.
