"NY Times Faulted For Inaccurate Reports On Nazi Holocaust"

Dear Editor:

Regarding recent reports in _The New York Times_ about
the existence of the gas chambers at the Mauthausen Nazi
concentration camp, for at least 40 years we have known that
there were no gas chambers at Mauthausen. Nevertheless, _New
York Times_ reporter Marlise Simons wrote about them on August 7,
1990. (If in doubt on this fact, please check the latest
_Encyclopedia of the Holocaust_, page 950.)

The _New York Times_ is known for its biased reporting.
It failed to report about the great Ukrainian famine orchestrated
by the Kremlin's Lazar Kaganovich in 1933 (about 7-to-10 million
victims). For the last 20 years reporters for the _Times_
systematically have written that four million people were gassed
at Auschwitz, while recognized historians such as Professor R.
Hilberg in his book _The Destruction of the European Jews_
determined in 1965 that it was not so. On July 18, 1990, the
massive granite, multilingual memorial plaques at Auschwitz
proclaiming the 4 million dead were removed. They ended up on
the dumping grounds of devalued historical items along with
statues of Lenin and Stalin. Still, one can expect the _Times_
to print that this is not so.

While one might understand and excuse the _Times_ for
printing irresponsible exaggerations of wartime propaganda in
1942, it is difficult to explain similar distortions 48 years
later. The just published multivolume _Encyclopedia of the
Holocaust_ concludes that there were no gas chambers in
Mauthausen or Dachau.

How can a moderately educated reader trust the _Times_
when its writers are not required to consult standard
encyclopedias or even earlier issues of the _Times_?
