1943
The United States establishes a War Crimes Commission to
investigate and try individuals suspected of such crimes,
defined as atrocities committed against civilian
populations. (USHMM, 1993, p. 49)
1944
At 5 A.M. the Hungarian police and Arrow Cross units begin
an operation against Budapest Jews, starting with the arrest
of able-bodied males. By evening, twenty-two thousand Jews
are arrested and moved directly to work on building
fortifications. Another operation against Jews in ghettos
who are not able to work is planned for a few days later.
