1939
"The [Lodz] ghetto was established ... and in February 1940
Jews were expelled from the rest of the city. On 30 April
1940 the ghetto was sealed off. About 164,000 Jews were
forced into an area of just over 1.5 square miles ... The
Germans had two aims in establishing the Lodz ghetto: to
concentrate the Jews in as small an area as possible, as a
precursor to their ultimate elimination, and to make as much
money as possible." (LeBor, 17)
1940
A prisoner from an outside work camp was shot dead while
attempting to escape from Auschwitz. (Czech et al, p. 126)
