1938
Himmler issues a circular directive on "Combating the Gypsy Plague"
(The so-called "Basic Gypsy Directive"). (Ruerup, 124)
1941
The Germans began killing Jews at Chelmno, at the first
fixed gassing institution to become operational on more than
an experimental basis, using gas vans. The victims were Jews
from Lodz. (Goldhagen, 157)
1944
The SS physician Carl Vaernet begins his second experimental
operations on seven castrated homosexual prisoners in
Buchenwald concentration camp; at least one prisoners dies
during the experiments. (See September 16.) (USHMM, 1994, p. 69)
The Russian siege of Budapest begins, with the city
surrounded on three sides. (Ibid.)
