August 12

1944

Raoul Wallenberg meets with Admiral Horthy, who agrees to
recognize new protective passes being issued by the Swedish
legation in Budapest; some five thousand passes were
authorized. Distributed to Budapest Jews, the protective
passes exempt them from deportation by placing them under
the protection of the Swedish legation. (USHMM 1994, 54-55)
