March 23
1943
Himmler receives a report that 1,274,166 Jews in the camps
of the General Government and 145,301 from Warthegau, the
western Polish area incorporated into the Reich, had been
subjected to "total evacuation" and "special treatment,"
meaning mass killing, as of the end of 1942. According to
Eichmann's testimony at his trial in Jerusalem in 1961, the
report prepared by Richard Korherr, Himmler's SS statistical
expert, was used by Himmler and Eichmann in planning further
stages of the "Final Solution." (USHMM 1993, p. 28)
1944
The Central Council of Hungarian Jews announces that it is
the only Jewish authority in Hungary and will maintain all
contacts with the Germans. (USHMM 1994, 33)
