SS Obersturmbannfuehrer (SS Lieutenant Colonel) Adolf
Eichmann inspects the "Theresienstadt family camp," BIIb, at
Auschwitz-Birkenau and hears reports from Dr. Leo Janowitz
(former director of the Central Secretariat of the
Theresienstadt ghetto) and Fredy Hirsch (an educator and
youth leader in Theresienstadt). (USHMM, 1994. Pg. 29)

A tribunal of the Kattowitz Gestapo sentences 163 Polish
prisoners to death; they are executed at barrack (Block) 11
in Auschwitz I. (Ibid.)

Also in February, 1944: In Sasow, in occupied central
Poland, the Germans burn alive and shoot the entire village
population, consisting of several hundred Catholics, for
assisting one hundred Jews hiding in a local forest....The
first food parcels for Danish deportees, sent by the Danish
organization `Fund of 1944,' are received at Theresienstadt.
With the arrival of the packages, the mortality rate of
Danish prisoners at Theresienstadt drops by more than
half....The "beautification" of the Theresienstadt ghetto
for inspection by the Red Cross and foreign visitors
begins, as ordered by SS Lieutenant Colonel Karl Rahm, the
ghetto's third and last commandant....The Germans assume the
administration of the Fossoli internment and transit camp;
the Security Service (SD) of Verona under SS Brigadefuehrer
(SS Brigadier General) Wilhelm Harster (previously in charge
of deportations in the occupied Netherlands) takes
control....Eight hundred children are deported from
concentration camps in Estonia to killing centers in
occupied Poland. Also in February 1943: The Jewish community
of Mainz in Germany is liquidated....German forces slaughter
the remaining ten thousand Jews of the Stanlislawow ghetto
in the Ukraine....The Kilomyia ghetto in the Ukraine is
liquidated, with the killing of the ghetto's remaining
fifteen hundred Jews in a nearby forest....While German
units stand by, Ukrainian gangs in Boryslav murder hundreds
of Jewish women and children. German SS and police units
begin systematically to round up German Gypsies and deport
them to Auschwitz-Birkenau; their number in Birkenau reaches
ten thousand within a few weeks....Five alleged Jewish
collaborators are executed by the Jewish Combat Organization
in the Warsaw ghetto in preparation for an expected
revolt....The Nuremberg racial laws are implemented in
Greece. Meanwhile, Eichmann complains officially to the
German foreign ministry that Italian authorities in occupied
Greece are naturalizing as many Greek Jews as possible in
order to give them protection against German
measures....Slovak newspapers publish reports that the
nation's remaining Jews, including converts to Catholicism
and others previously exempt, are to be deported in the near
future. Slovak bishops protest to the government on behalf
of the converts....Three trains with a total of 2,998 Jews,
including hundreds of children, leave France for Auschwitz.
